The night after Judgement Day 2002, Undertaker defended his world title against RVD. RVD actually got the pinfall win and was announced as the new undisputed champion before the match was restarted due to Taker’s foot being on the ropes.
Normally this would be a typical “dusty finish” and we’d move on, but following Taker winning the match after it restarted, he was announced as the “new” undisputed champion, with JR and King both saying that he won the title on back-to-back nights.
The way they treated this after Taker won seems different from a typical dusty finish. They spoke as if Taker did win the title back after loosing it. Anyone think that the WWE may have originally thought of considering this two reigns, and counting RVD’s title win in the record books, or was this just a slip up from the announcers and commentators?

Technically it should've been a new title reign with the match restating.
From what I remember after that night they never classed RVD as a former champ.

Yeah for that one night they kept referring to Rob as having won and lost the undisputed title in one night, only to drop it the next week with JR playing it up for years that “RVD is the greatest performer to never be a world champ.”

Vince loved the “dusty finish” in 2000. Benoit had two more that year following Jericho’s phantom win.

Damn! I gotta go back and watch Fully Loaded 2000 and Unforgiven 2000 to see the Benoit "wins". I forgot how funny it was, cause both times Benoit is celebrating up the aisle and here comes Commissioner Mick Foley to rip the title out of Benoit's hands, not once but twice! I laughed at it happening at the second time because it was such a carbon copy of the first time that you couldn't help but laugh.

Looking back it’s hilarious that Commissioner Foley seemed to have it out for Benoit when he didn’t reverse other heels cheating to win the title like HHH and Angle that year. Storyline wise you’d think that they were building towards an eventual Benoit/Foley match. Mick helped bring in the Radicalz at the start of the year, only for them to join HHH and turn on him. Later when Mick becomes the commissioner, he prevents Benoit from stealing the belt twice from The Rock. The night after Unforgiven, Benoit brings up that Foley screwed him twice and that he deserves payback…only to completely drop the feud by the end of the night and never mention it again.

This was a great night. I loved it & went crazy when RVD won but it sucked how it got reversed lol.
I wish the win did count tho.

For them to refer to RVD as only being the Undisputed Champion for like a few minutes, and any reference to it going forward - it would make zero sense for him to never win it again. It would always be a * next to his title reigns. I assume that they went back on it because they had no concrete plans to feature him in future World titles matches (the Unforgiven 02 one being a test for RVD only with HHH), and they weren't ready to put the title on him anytime soon. It would only make sense to me to refer to this as an actual title reign if he were to have a big push and eventually win the big one for a proper term a few months later.
Being a babyface, this is not something you tease with the fans, give him a couple of minutes of a reign and then NEVER basically revisit the opportunity. All that does is make them look weaker for never having the chance again.

What a moment!! Epic pop. Jericho in 2000 was the man.

If it was ever intentional, I'm glad they didn't stick with it. Like somebody mentioned above, it would be an asterisk next to his reign. I didn't like when they had Mysterio win and drop the Undisputed title in the same night either. I don't think titles should change hands like that aside from MITB cash ins.
