New York CNN — Adults bought more toys for themselves than for any other age group last quarter for the first time ever, surpassing toys for even the historically-dominant preschooler market. Consumers 18 years of age and up spent $1.5 billion in toy-related purchases in the period from January through April, overtaking the three-to five-year-old demographic as the most important age group for the toy industry, according to a new report from market research firm Circana. Looking back over a longer period, the report said as many as 43% of adults purchased a toy for themselves in the past year, with the top reasons being for personal fun, socialization and for collecting. Trading cards, Squishmallows (which are a rage across age groups), Lego sets and sports toys were among the most sought-after toy products in the period, the report said. .... I'd say wrestling figures definitely are "sports toys" -- and I'm not surprised by the article.
In about 10 years, I'd bet the number are closer to 75% of adults are buying action figures specifically. Maybe higher.

Not to be negative, but is it a good thing the cat is out the bag? The real truth is out? Under the rationalization that it was still kids buying $30 Star Wars and Marvel toys, they still had to somewhat remember that these were TOYS. That their audience was kids. But now, companies might start thinking action figures are not worth it anymore and stop production period. Or go full force "action figures are only bought by adults" and start charging even more out the ass for them. No longer having to worry about moms and grandpas being able to afford them. That action figures are only bought by nerds with nothing but disposable income. Hasbro and Mattel are already starting to experiment with charging Neca/Super7-like prices with some of their products. I am waiting for the day Marvel Legends are nothing but painted blocks of wood. But still cost $40 a pop with Hasbro standing there continuing to say "But this is the best we can do!!!!!!! Labor!! Material Costs!!! " And Scott "Toy Guru" has been saying it's still kids for birthday parties... One of my biggest questions I have always wanted to ask him: What parents or grandparents are buying their kids $25 to $30 ML or Black Series figures? Especially in today's world and economy? And when did "kids" start demanding 6inch highly detailed figures with an obscene variety of characters?

Eh, this kinda makes me sad....
Today's kids aren't playing with toys anymore. Ipads, Phones, Tik Tok, etc.
They'll never know the pleasure of walking into Toys R Us....
Will the next generation even "collect" wrestling figures? Why do we collect them? We grew up having toys, and I know when I buy some of these "Legends" I'm thinking "damn I wish they had these when I was a kid." These kids have all the toys, and they don't seem to care.
In 30 years will wrestling figures even be a thing? Will the adults in 30 years cruise all over town in their self-driving cars hunting for Cody Rhodes & Roman Reigns Legends Figures?

Just looking at this from another angle, I don't think it's something to cheer about. The percentage is most likely going up because sales to children are significantly dropping, rather than sales to adults significantly increasing. It's been trending this direction for years, and eventually things were going to flip.
It may lead manufacturers to push more adult collector product, but they really already were (the MNW line ain't for kids...). But the loss in consumers on the kid side is going to have down stream effects that aren't great for us.

And people say I’m a weirdo for playing with my figures like a child sometimes. But I don’t do it for me. I do it for that little boy I used to be who dreamed of having a full arena playset and never got it because it didn’t exist or I didn’t know it existed. But now I do! And child me would freak out if he saw what adult me has. When I see my scale ring and my barricade and my multiple referees and numerous office staff and my announce tables with commentators and my entrance stage that leads to a backstage area with an office and a locker room and an interview set, I think to myself “This must be how those rich kids in the 80s felt looking at their USS Flagg aircraft carrier.”
