Now grant it my view of companies like Ring of Honor, IWA Mid South, Dragon Gate, Pro Wrestling NOAH, and others won't change with a response here.
But I've often wondered what goes into match on the Indy Scene. I mean you watch two guys like Nigel McGuinness and Takeshi Morishima and they just go at it with such force that while neither is trying to kill the other, they do everything in their power to give a competitive vibe to the fight. That said, where is the line drawn between it being a work, and it being two guys who are just good and can put a good match together on the fly?
I'm sure I've heard rumbling that ROH wrestlers put together their matches prior to doors opening, but is it in the same nature WCW did it where they work spots or is it more a work in the ring, and just be comfortable when you lock up infront of a live crowd?
I don't wanna give people the wrong impression. I'm not insulting any wrestling here, just often wondered with how strong some companies produce with wrestling, whether they have people who can wing it because the guys know what they're doing. Or is it the same style as a WWE or TNA match, where time goes into setting up the match long before they actually lock up for the live events?

I think they work it out that day, just like people in the WWE and TNA do. Punk and Joe talk about working out spots to their matches beforehand.
But they also call things in the ring and ad lib. Wrestling is about knowing what the fans want and trying to make that even more important. By knowing and doing it, or knowing and teasing it, it makes it greater.

According to the Joe/Punk shoot, they only had a handful of spots laid out for each of their trilogy beforehand, and the rest of the match was called on the fly.
I also know for a fact (I think Gabe said it once) that the FIP Punk/Danielson Best Two out of Three falls match was called almost entirely on the fly, and they only entered the ring knowing what the finish for the first fall was.

I would imagine that the wrestlers would lay out a few of the spots before the match just to have a certain comfort level with the other performer.

All of it, I don't want to sound like a smarkish prick, but seeing as I know some local wrestlers round here I've often been to shows with them. Doing so, I get there pretty early and whilst setting up stuff see the guys planning out their matches. They pretty much plan out the whole thing, and practice certain spots or quickly run through the match.

See, I know there's some great workers right now that are free lance, but I still think no matter how great that they wanna put on the best match. To do so, they gotta get the ball rolling and have something in mind. Of course though like acting, improvising only improves your role as an actor. So I don't doubt a guy like maybe Nigel McGuinness, can go out there again Bryan Danielson, and work 90% of the match on the fly.

In Ric Flairs book he says that to consider yourself a great wrestler, you have to go into the match not planning anything and still make it enjoyable.
I'd say it depends how good of a wrestler you are. Two un-heard of indy guys who arn't as comfortable wrestling will plan everything, yet guys like Joe and Punk, very comfortable, experienced wrestlers, don't need to plan as much and can do things on the spot.

Once you are good enough you can plan out an entire match verbally in like 30 minutes. I have done it before and while in the back thats what all the other guys do.
