Besides, regular wrestling usually features people launching themselves off the top rope and crash landing on others, people getting dropped on their head, etc. It's not like wrestling is perfectly safe. So if we're going to get on Death Matches because "they're killing each other", let's get on almost every style of wrestling. EXACTLY. I see the original poster has a Morishima sig, and I love puro as much as anyone, but what guys like Kobashi and Misawa did to their bodies for years in the 90's was just as bad, if not tons worse, than what guys like Drake Younger do. In the long run, having some tacks in your head or a light tube to your back will not do nearly as much damage as 3 tiger suplexes a match. The AJPW alumni are having seriously problems with their knees, necks, and backs. Death match guys don't have nearly as many legitimate physical problems past cuts and scars. It might not look as graphic, but watching Kobashi get dumped on his head should be a lot harder to watch than a light tube shot. this is true. I will provide a couple of examples to back this theory. "Sick" Nick Mondo. He took some of the nastiest stuff in the history of American death matches. The weedwhacker to the stomach, the roof to light tube log cabin bump, and a barbed wire bat shot that makes anyone who has seen it say "Bull who"?. Now look at Taue, who has problems walking from day to day. Another great example would be Hayabusa. Look at all the randomly violent stuff he did in his "death match career". Then in a straight match, he lands a flip incorrectly and is paralized for many years and still no where near 100%. I can only come up with a handful of guys that have been legitimately badly injured in death matches. Mitch Page's head from the Grandfather clock, Necro's arm nearly coming off, Brandon Prophet breaking his arm and using it as a weapon, SeXXXy Eddy's little arm fountain, and recently Ian's eye. Now let's look at guys injured in "straight" matches. Droz is still paralyzed from a botch powerbomb. Hulk Hogan has 2 plastic hips from years of incorrect leg drops. HHH has torn his quad twice now. Cactus Jack lost his ear in a straight match. Death matches are more dangerous, but when they are done correctly and aren't just a bunch of backyard wrestlers hitting each other with stuff (see Gage, Nick) they aren't NEARLY as bad as you're making out for them. The fact that a lot of death matches don't rely on ridicious stuff like El Generico's BRAINBUSTAHHHHHHHHHH! or Nigel McGuiness's Tower of London for "shock value", instead opting for a big boom on some light tubes or barbed wire, really makes me question how safe a REGULAR match is these days.. I'm also wondering where you seen an IWA show with "10-15" people. The absolute minimum I have ever seen in Plainfield would be 67. The only time I have EVER seen below the 25 range, and this is coming from a massive IWA collection, would be Hoosierland Brawl. And I'm doubting you went out and purchased a tape for the must see main event of Ian Rotten versus "Metal" Steve Stone inside a cage..

wrestling is about (selling, psychology and a story) into their matches. Ian Rotten is the best for that kind of stuff, IMO. So blatant calling and gigging don't matter to you? Just saying, I think Ian is far from the best at deathmatches. Necro Butcher does it all perfectly. I meant he's the best of the DM guys for building a match towards the desired fever pitch. Look at the Mickie match from last year's KOTDM. He him hawed around for like 10 minutes, just getting the fans AMPED to the point where Mickie had to use the water jug or whatever it was so they could capitalize on the heat.

, and a barbed wire bat shot that makes anyone who has seen it say "Bull who"?. ..when was this? And I like Dean's point about headdroppiness and such and how it takes a greater toll on your body, but man, look at guys like Drake Younger who are landing on their head and doing deathmatches all the time. He's going to be feeling the worst of both worlds in a couple years.
