Before ROH, PWG, IWA-MS, and Chikara... as in before CM Punk, Low Ki, Bryan Danielson, Samoa Joe, Super Dragon, etc.... when the attitude era was in full swing, what was the indy scene like? Did it have the loyal fanbase that it does today, and who were its main players in terms of wrestlers and promotions. Thank you.

Well, there was ECW, a mega indie in a lot of ways. And Jersey All Pro, IWA, CZW were all around during the Attitude Era. But before that, a lot of the indies were utter crap. A diamond in the rough could easily get lost among the horrible horrible wrestlers. Still is like that outside of the six or seven major promotions.

MAW was around the entire time too. I think around the 97-98 alot of wrestling was exposed and over ran, probably from the internet. as soon as WCW and ECW went under, many fans turned to the Indys.
Pre ROH, most everyone else was still around. XPW, CZW, IWA MS, JAPW, ECWA, NWA, MAW, and countless others.
Actually MAW and IWA have been some of the longest running promotions in the US who are truly independent. IWA has run an insane amount of shows and through DVDs and VHS they've remained afloat. MAW was well managed. Never growing a large fan base, but they did stay around for 10 years or so.

ICW and PCW......were around before the attitude era and helped user in talents like Edge, Christian Cage, Rhino, and Joe E. Legend.
