Surprised there's no thread about this. ROH debuted in Deer Park, NY in front of 450-550, for Race to the Top Tournament, Night 1.
Before I start, this was the ABSOLUTE WORST venue I've ever attended for a wrestling event. I know that they were under pressure to find another place quick after Sports Plus closed, but christ this was small. I'd say my college gym, but even my high school gym was twice as big! The place was so god damn tight and the people smelled like ****. Yeah, Deer Park. Sorry.
Opener was BJ Whitmer VS Pelle Primeau. Primeau scored an upset with a roll-up. It was good, kinda heatless though as most thought Whitmer winning was a foregone conclusion. After the match, Whitmer beats up Primeau and Rhett Titus.
Davey Richards submits Jigsaw to the 14:59. Also pretty good, about on par with the TPI 2006 match they had. Jigsaw was given a chance to shine and he did. Richards is a pretty good heel now also.
Claudio defeats Hallowicked with the Ricola Bomb. This was the best match of the night so far. They clicked really well, and Hallowicked does some amazing lucharesu for a guy of his size and build. Claudio is entertaining as like always, even with the gaudiest tights I've ever seen.
Mike Quackenbush defeats Matt Sydal with a roll-up. First huge upset of the night for me. I honestly couldn't believe Sydal went out in the first round. This was good, not great, and didn't live up to the "dream match" that it was to me atleast. I wouldn't skip it though as it was a fun match. Finish saw Sydal miss a Shooting Sydal Press and Quackenbush rolled him in some weird ass cradle.
Chris Hero pins Erick Stevens with the Hero's Welcome. I love Hero. Stevens is good. This was a really fun match. Not a MOTYC, but the antics of Hero and his entourage are AWESOME. Seriously, it's great. Hero should win this all.
Roderick wins the Four-Way Fray. Aries got a huge response... and was out first when Roderick pushed him off the top and all three jumped on top of him. Akuma tapped to the Heel Hook, then Rave tapped to the Strong-Hold. This felt like the beginning of a Rave face turn, as he looked strong in this. Weird booking, though.
El Generico pins Delirious with the Brainbuster. This was the second big upset of the night, as Generico cleanly pinned Delirious with two Yakuza Kicks and the Brainbuster. Not as good as the We're No Joke match the two had, but better then the PWG match, if that helps. Fun match, nothing really memorable.
Brent Albright submits Matt Cross to the Crow-Bar. Albright now has an executioner hood. Cross' high-flying stuff was hit welll, and he died on all of the suplexes he took. That's about it.
Jack Evans pins Kevin Steen with the 630. Steen is awesome. Along with Hero, one of the best new additions that ROH has made. Evans came out with a New Hazard shirt on; I was hoping there would be some at the merchandise table but there wasn't, so this was just a tease. Steen does hurty moves, Evans makes a comeback, trade of big moves, Evans knocks Steen off the ropes and hits his finish. Really good stuff.
Briscoes retain the ROH Tag Titles over Dragon/Nigel. Great stuff. Not a MOTYC, but a really strong way to end a good show. Scarily enough, I think this is the first time Danielson has worked either Briscoe since 12/2003. Finish was Nigel accidentally hitting Danielson with a Rebound Lariat while Danielson accidentally hit him with a Rolling Elbow (both Briscoes moved out of the way), and Mark cradled Nigel for the win. I would recommend seeking this one out.
So yeah, this was a good show. There was absolutely nothing bad in-ring wise, and it'll probably be even better on DVD without the ****ty building and smelly fat people.
