OK I will be buying a big TV soon and don't know the difference between all the plasma, HDTV, etc stuff. I need to know which to buy and where to go like Walmart, Circuit city, etc. I'm not going after a really expensive one just a big screen with good picture for a decent price.

Circuit City. Got my HD one there for 250, 19 inch though. Don't do what this guy did, he got ripped off. Do not buy plasma. They are prone to burned in images. I suggest going lumenlab.com. Check out their site and their message boards. That should help.

Ok first of all its all in what you are looking for. The two most important questions is how much you are willing to spend. Then what size. Then if you want Plasma, LCD, or DLP. If its and HDTV or if is just an HD monitor. Then if you want 720i, 1080i, or 1080p. I will tell you one thing dont buy your tv at Wal-mart, K-mart, or Target; if you want 1080p. They also dont carry too many top name brands. Then again just because it isnt top name doesnt mean it isnt any good either. There are other names other than Sony, Samsung, Sharp and LG; that are just as good as those brands, and are alot cheaper. You can go to places such as Costco, or Sams Club also (if you have a membership usually $30-$50). One brand that is highly rated and has quickly become popular is Vizio. Go to www.vizio.com and take a look. Their website even tells you where you can buy them the particular tv you want, and the usual going price. Olevia is also a good brand. As was stated by someone else; I would suggest LCD, because they dont have any burn in and are a tad lighter weight than plasma. Dont do DLP if you want to save room. DLP; though it may be cheaper; is BIG all the way around. Yes the have as good of pictures as the others; they rainbow depending how close you are, and what angle you are sitting at like the old projection tvs. Another comparison to the old Projection tvs is it takes up a lot of room. It does have a thick back on it, but they are lighter weight than the old projections. There you go..I hope I answered some of your questions.

I guess I should have thrown an "and" in there.

Let me set the record straight about the DLPs, because wcw24 is wrong. First, they DON'T rainbow or lose visibility from any angles. They also don't lose visibility because of ambient light. There is no glare, no matter how much light is in the room. Second, unless you are hanging the TV on the wall, they don't take up any more space than a flat panel. While that doesn't seem right, let me tell you why. Nearly any TV stand that you would buy for a flat panel is the same depth as a DLP (Which is about HALF the depth of an old-style projection), so even if you have a flat panel, it will still stick out from the wall as much as a DLP if you have it on a stand. Plus, surprisingly they weigh less than LCD or Plasma TVs. Third, have THE best picture, period, not just for your dollar. The brightness and crispness is incredible. I have a 58" DLP, and my HD programming and HD DVDs look absolutely stunning. And finally the price is obviously a plus, because you can get a BIG screen, 1080p, reputable brand for half the cost of a LCD of the same size.. maybe less than half the cost. If you just have to get a flat panel, get an LCD. Don't get a plasma. Something like this.. except Samsungs tend to be a bit overpriced, imo. I've had good luck with Toshiba and Mitsubishi.

My dad has a 51" DLP and it rainbows and glares like crazy, and its a SONY!!!! He hates the damn thing, but since he didnt want to lug that thing back up the stairs to return the SOB; he decided to keep it. Granted it is a nice tv, but after he saw my Vizio LCD; he was drooling. When he initially told my mom what kind of tv he wanted, it was during the spring. She went and bought the tv in the fall. I went with her to look. She went and looked at DLP. At the time I asked her if she was sure he wanted DLP and not LCD. She said "no; im sure he said DLP"..I wasnt gonna argue with my mom, so I let it go. Then when I told my dad about it; he was pissed!

In simple terms, you go for a plasma if you want the big screen. However, if you want the medium size, go with LCD's. LCD's are better in smaller sizes whereas plasma's are better when bigger. Also, get a high definiton one or a high definition box to go with it. It improves the picture.

Wrong! My dad has a 51" DLP and it rainbows and glares like crazy, and its a SONY!!!! I don't know what the problem is with his, but mine is perfect from every angle and every light, it's a 58" mitsubishi. He ought to have taken it back because a DLP shouldn't have those problems. Especially glare.

*sigh* plasma IS flat screen. Perhaps you should look elsewhere for tv advice... Aren't the LCD flat screens too? Yeah, flat screen/panel refers to LCD and plasma. If you were wondering about HD Ready and HD Built-in (is this still an issue?), HD Ready means that you will need some sort of box, whether it be a cable box, dish box, or just an HD box, in order to receive an HD signal. HD Built-in means that you will be able to use an antenna to receive HD signals over the air (providing they are available over the air in your area) without any additional equipment. BUT that is only the channels that are available over the air in your area. You're not going to get ESPN HD this way.

I would get an LCD. I saw a diggin' 40" RCA and a 35" Panasonic at Wal-Mart around here for both around 1000$. I also saw a 29" Vizia for around 500$.
I only have three HDTVs, two Sonys and one Gateway. I use my Gateway for my computer, I got it for 250$ and it's around 21". My other Sonys are around 35" and 50".
