Part V
WWF Superstars
Released 1991
Format
GameBoy
The first hand held WWF title really is quite special as it is the definition of a quick pick up and play game. Released back in 1991 the game featured 5 of the biggest WWF Superstars like every game you could argue that there are some strange omissions Sgt Slaughter immediately springs to mind however when you think that the game only has 5 characters you really would not replace a single one of them, for the time it was released the only realistic change in my own personal opinion would have been either Ted Dibiase or Mr Perfect for Sgt Slaughter.
Graphically this game for the time looks fantastic theres no way about it it has nice bug chunky graphics kind of like a much slimmed down version of Wrestlefest. The whole presentation looks great everything from the title screen to the arena its self which has 2 views. Even though the arena lacked a crowd you did get flashes in the darkness like the fans were taking photos.
One thing that was really cool about this game was the way in which you had superstars interviews. The interviews were all character specific so say you went Hulk Hogan in your match against the Ultimate Warrior his comments would be based to him it was such a great touch and something that we never saw again in a Acclaim title.
As well as the superstar interviews one other cool little feature was Vince McMahon would give you a short review of the match. It would not go into great detail but again like the pre match interviews they would be specific to the wrestlers who had the match.
Gameplay wise this game is great it may seem shallow to someone playing it on a rom on there PC but you have to remember at the time it was intended as a pick up and play game and it sure as hell delivered that. Your superstars all pretty much have the same moves however they each have a individual attack after a 3 punch combo for example after the 3rd punch Warrior would do a head but and Savage would ht the opponent with a elbow.
The game actual had a decent selection of moves available not to mention the bad ass throw your opponent out of the ring from anywhere in It super move which would change the game view. One thing that really still to this day annoys me is the fact all the wrestlers had a top rope elbow drop except Randy Savage he dropped a knee instead perhaps because his 3 punch combo move was a elbow they decided a knee would change it up but in my honest opinion this is the only real fault in the game.
The game saw you pick you guy and go through the other 4 wrestlers you could chose between a single fall or a best 2 out of 3 falls match. After you had defeated the final opponent you got what for gameboy standards at the time was a really high quality picture of your chosen superstar. I know its personal opinion but still o this day I do not think WWF Superstars has been beaten as a pick up and play hand held wrestling title.
