We improve ourselves by victories over ourself. There must be contests, and you must win.
Edward Gibbon
A mind troubled by doubt cannot focus on the course to victory.

The scene this week begins in the deserts of Egypt. There is sand blowing everywhere with a violent speed, but the sky is blue and the storm is dying down. Eventually it fades completely, leaving us with a clear view of some of the great parts of Egypt. The most prominent due to its size is the only one of the first Wonders of the World left – the Great Pyramid of Khufu. It towers over everything else, shadowing so much of the landscape that it would appear the sun had been eclipsed at that area. There are two camels heading towards this structure, both carrying people. One of those people is the guide, dressed in a turban and covered in desert robes coloured white to reflect the sun’s intense heat. The other person stands out in the bright daylight – his maroon, unbuttoned shirt reveals that he is Skyler Striker. Despite the guide’s earlier advice that Skyler should also wear white, Skyler has obviously not listened and the most protection he has given himself is sunscreen and his usual pair of sunglasses. The two approach the pyramid slowly, and as soon as they enter the shade, Skyler jumps off the camel and begins walking towards the pyramid. The guide shakes his head and continues on camel back. Eventually they reach the entrance to the pyramid and enter through the newest entrance. Skyler eventually reaches a point where he puts his hand on the guide’s shoulder and stops him, and the guide acknowledges him, knowing Skyler’s intentions full well – to enter the King’s Chamber alone, as did many previous rulers such as Alexander the Great and Napoleon. As Skyler enters, there is no light – only darkness. The guide waits near the entrance, so Skyler is essentially alone in the giant pyramid of Giza.
SS: Ah, this – this is greatness embodied. The pyramid – one of the most fascinating structures in the world. It has predicted massive events, the end of the world, World War Two, and so much more. Its construction is perfect – mathematically almost impossible to be so defined and perfect in its statistical measurements. And this – this is what I am to become. To become respected as one of the greatest things to ever happen upon this earth. To become a World Champion. To become – perfection.
Skyler stares at the roof of his chamber and shouts out, to whatever he is going on about.
SS: And this – this is what I need. Inspiration, a motive, a reason to win. I have reason to fight – but give me reason to win!
And the pyramid answers. The door of the chamber shuts on Skyler, and the guard hears this, running to the door, which Skyler locks. A conventional door has been used, and it is a regular lock, of which the guide has the key to on his camel, which is outside. The guide runs out to get it, and rushes back, but Skyler has his own experience in the meantime.
SS: That… might be a good reason.
While the guide is getting his key, Skyler loses himself in the pyramid and its secrets. It speaks to him, through him, and his voice is coarse, deeper than normal, with a hint of darkness to it.
SS: Every light must fade… every heart must return to the darkness from whence it came.
A different voice, much deeper and much more forceful and powerful that is not coming from Skyler’s mouth rings out.
??: Open yourself to the darkness. That is all. Let your heart, your being, become darkness itself.
The voice coming through Skyler speaks up again, with renewed vigour, speaking with Skyler’s memory yet with different words.
SS: Ice Queen… you understand so little. One who knows nothing can understand nothing. All worlds begin in darkness and all so end. The heart is no different. Darkness sprouts within it, grows, consumes it. Such is its nature. In the end, every heart returns to the darkness whence it came. You see, darkness is the heart's true essence.
At this point the guide bursts in, key in the door, candle in his hand. By that light we can see Skyler, no shirt, and scars across his chest, with fresh blood. His eyes are a pure black, and his hair is ruffled from its usual position. Skyler speaks to the guide as if he were Vice.
SS: Behold, the endless abyss. Look as hard as you are able. You'll not find even the smallest glimmer of light. From these dark depths are all hearts born. Even yours.
The guide mutters something incomprehensible in Egyptian, but Skyler cannot understand. The guide tries what he knows from Skyler’s English lesson.
Guide: Mister… Striker?
Skyler, worn out by the power flowing through him and his recent experience, collapses to the ground. The last thing he can hear is the guide on his cell phone, which, surprisingly and coincidentally, has reception through the walls of the pyramid.
FIVE HOURS LATER
Skyler regains consciousness outside the entrance to the pyramid. the guide is over him, looking at him. Skyler’s eyes have reverted back to their usual red and his shirt is being used as a bandage to cover his now dried wounds.
Guide: Help… soon.
SS: Help..
Guide:…soon.
SS: Okay.
The guide goes back to his camel and Skyler whispers to the sky.
SS: Darkness… the power of powers. I am not evil, not darkness. To win, one must use not only darkness, but light. My fury is not hatred… my fury is righteous fury. The one motivated by my desire to retake my life. I am light and dark. I am yin and yang. I am… perfectly balanced.
Skyler rolls his head over to look at the pyramid.
SS: I did it, Ms. Queen. The experience of that chamber… was unreal. Incredible. But it motivated me. Enough. I am light and dark, and I am your end, Ice. Mock me with everything you have… I don’t care. Hit me with everything you’ve got… I don’t care. Fight me with all of your being – I don’t care. I will come back time after time after time, light and dark, battling it out in me and you. It’s all about motivation, Ice. What have you got? Nothing. Me? I have my emotions, and that is enough.
Skyler sits up to the best of his ability, breathing heavily. The guide looks at him and pours water over his head, which Skyler greatly appreciates and enjoys.
SS: I now know what I should have known a long time ago – that one cannot rely on things such as fate and destiny to succeed. One has to rely on oneself and their confidence in their own abilities, along with their motivation. This Felo-De-Se, Ice Queen – I will be your end.
Skyler stands but collapses again and passes out as the scene ends.
Cherish your own emotions and never undervalue them.
