In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities. In the expert's mind there are few.
Shunryu Suzuki
The scene begins in a run-down construction site during sunset. The air is warm and the atmosphere is fairly calm and relaxed, a quiet section of a restless world. The site has obviously been abandoned to the world, because there are unused pieces of equipment and building materials everywhere, growing conspicuously large amounts of moss on them. We hear a metal bolt fall from one of the upper floors and clatter to the earth below, and as we look up, we can see the outline of a man whose shirt flows in the wind, unbuttoned and torn. The man’s hair is short and spiked, and shines platinum blonde in the sun. we can see various scars alone his body but none more prominent than the gash which runs down his left leg, which we can see from the rip in his pants which tears from the base to the knee, letting the material flap about behind the man. He jumps from the edge of the second floor to stand on a tall Greek column, which stands tall but alone in the construction site, which was obviously designed to be a lavish mansion. The man stands straight, staring into the sunset in the distance., almost like a hero would in a movie scene. He wears sunglasses that disguise his eyes and from the information given to you in this paragraph, you will know by now that the man is none other than Skyler Striker.
SS: I don’t want to have to speak of the past of last week… let’s just say I didn’t lose and leave it at that. I prefer to speak of the future rather than lament the past. If anything, I use the past as my fuel. But I have said enough of it, and I’m going to leave it there.
Skyler runs a hand through his hair, feeling sweat and shaking his hand off as he stares down at the various pieces of building material below him.
SS: Looking at this reminds me of my life before the incident. I was building up, I was going somewhere, then it happened and I was stopped in my tracks. And then it all changed. You see that building over there?
Skyler points to an extremely modern building, which looks very flashy, shiny, and very new, as if only a few days old. It twists like a strand of DNA, spiralling upwards to the top which if it was midday, would point directly to the sun. An American flag waves in the afternoon breeze as the sun sets behind it.
SS: That’s what my life has become. My life after the incident was – is – new, rebuilt better than before. But somewhere, deep down, I still feel as though the building I left behind, the one I’m standing in, might have been the better road, but it is not for me to question that judgement. What happened happened had couldn’t have happened any other way, because I’m standing here in the WFWF right now, and I have one of the biggest matches of my reborn career in it.
Skyler turns his head to a massive billboard that changes its message as he looks to a banner of this week’s Felo-De-Se show. The picture has Miguel Sanchez, Calvin Lee and Ice Queen on one side facing the trio of Wayne McGurk Kurt Burton and Skyler himself. The picture then changes again to an advertisement for a new brand of beer with a lot of scantily clad women washing the beer bottle. Skyler shakes his head and turns away from it.
SS: Degrading. Anyway, you can see my point. I have no idea who one of my opponents is. The other two I have small amounts of history with. If the Ice Queen thinks she got robbed last week, she needs to know that a win is a win no matter how it is achieved. I’ll make sure she doesn’t have to worry about who wins again when I destroy her this time. Maybe then she can go back to the North Pole. Or the South Pole. Or wherever it is that she enjoys ice so much from. Then I move onto Miguel Sanchez. The man who couldn’t manage to hold a winning streak anywhere outside this company. Miguel, I don’t think I’ve been in the ring with you before, but you won’t want to have to enter the ring again with me after this week. Consider yourself warned. As for the last man, Calvin Lee, who thinks he’s so high and mighty. Lee, I told a man – a World Champion – this same message I’m about to tell you before. It doesn’t matter how many times you can mock me. I don’t care one way or the other. Insinuations are pointless and predictable in the business. I could deal them straight back, but I won’t bother, you won’t listen anyway.
Skyler jumps down from the pillar onto the ground, where he rolls to stop the impact from breaking bones in his feet. He stands and dusts himself off, before heading to the exit of the construction site. By now the sun as gone down completely and the lights that appear only at night are beginning to switch themselves on. Skyler walks out through the gap in the fence and down the street, to the nearby beach. The scene is silent, and there is almost no-one about. One would think that a meteor is about to hit the city, but that isn’t scheduled to happen for another year and a half. Eventually he reaches the jetty, where he stares out at the ocean.
SS: The sea. One of man’s biggest foes. It-
Skyler is interrupted by his cell phone, which alerts Skyler of his new message with the tone of ‘The Crusade’ by Trivium. He sighs and removes it from his pocket, flipping it open to reveal the picture of who is messaging him – and it is Kurt Burton. Skyler rolls his eyes and opens the message which reads ‘Skyler, are you sure we’ll be okay in our match?’. Skyler replies quickly and messages Burton back with ‘Kurt, for the final time, stop messaging me. For the seventeenth time – yes, we will be fine.’. He sends the message and switches the phone mode to voice recording, before speaking into it.
SS: Note to self – need new phone and a new number.
Skyler closes his phone, stepping back and throwing it like a baseball pitcher would into the ocean.
SS: That takes care of that problem. Burton, I’ve faced you before one on one and won it on that. You’d better perform better than that tonight. McGurk – you’re champion in this business, the only champion in this company. I’m glad to have you on your side. You have no need to worry – I won’t have to catch up. I’ll be right there on par with both you and – if he’s not drunk – Burton. On Felo-De-Se, the Crusade will continue. Be on guard.
Skyler removes his shirt and throws it into the ocean, diving in after it into the cold seawater. He resurfaces momentarily and dives again, swimming under the cold, deep blue water as the scene ends.
