The scene starts on a winding road. It is dusk, almost dark, as there is moderate traffic on the highway, passing the car on the left side. I’m in the driver’s seat of the car and I am carefully analyzing the terrain in front of me. I am driving through some mountainous region, and I turn onto the exit when I saw a sign that says Clarksburg. I find myself on two lane, more country road. After a couple of minutes, I pass a sign that says Clarksburg City Limits. I continue to drive and make a few turns before going up a hill. All the while, I’ve wondered, should I really be going here? Here, I see a high fence lined at the top with barbed wire. Inside the fence, there is a big stone building, with the sign on it that says Salem Boys Detention Center. I stop at the gate and roll down the window. The gate man comes up to the car.
GM: Can I help you?
Just here for a visit.
GM: Name.
Josh Dean.
GM: Wait are you that wrestler guy from WFWF?
That’s what they tell me.
GM: You’re looking good so far there. So what’s purpose of the visit?
Let’s just say a blast back to the past.
The gateman looks at me with an odd eye. He has a confused look on his face. Finally he perks up and opens the gate.
GM: Go on in, I’ll inform them that you are here.
I drive the car inside the gate and find a parking spot. I get out of the car, and I look around at the desolate surroundings, and then the sign on the building. The place hasn’t changed.
A long time ago, when I was younger, after my aunt died, I found myself getting into the wrong situations at the wrong times. When I was 14, I got jumped by a gang of older guys and was beaten pretty badly. From that moment on, I set out a goal to get revenge on them, one by one. I did, but it landed me here. It was here that Robbie discovered me and offered to help train me and took me in. I can’t forget this place, and what it meant when I was at my lowest. This is one of the baddest places in West Virginia, where children from all over went for a multitude of reasons, from skipping school, all the way up to murder.
I at one time was part of them for aggravated assault with a weapon. Four counts of it to be exact. I’m still shocked to this day, I made it out only after a year here. This is Salem. The reasoning behind this visit is to show a little bit of my past. This is part of it. I want you to see what gave me the mental toughness and desire to better myself. I need you to see how bad I was as an immature youth.
I was escorted into the building by some guards. Once inside I was escorted to another set of guards that take them into a main room where cells line to the ceiling. I look through the place that he used to call home. I see the juveniles starting gang fights. The whole place turns into a ruckus and the guards have to throw tear gas out to keep the inmates at bay. Walking toward them is middle aged, graying man, with a five o clock shadow. He is wearing what looks like an army officer’s uniform. I smile as the man comes closer and extends his hands out for a hug.
Man: You son of a bitch! I can’t believe that you are here!
I told you Marty, when I left this joint, this wouldn’t be the last you’d see of me. I told you I’d come back to visit!
Marty and I hug. Marty is Robbie’s brother. He is the one that introduced me to Robbie all those years ago. He is a guard here and he always watched out for me. I couldn’t thank him enough for getting me out of this place.
Marty: So what took you so long to come back, Superstar?
You know, trying to make it a go out of wrestling. So far it’s paid off well. I’ve been around the world, seen a lot of places.
Marty: I know, I’ve seen. Hey you want to see some of the old guards.
Sure why not. That is if they can remember me.
Marty: I’m sure that they will.
Marty gets on his megaphone in his grasp. He raises it up to the ceiling. He beings to speak into it.
Marty: Hey ers, get down here, because we have a special guest! Superstar has come back to visit!
Marty puts the megaphone down and the he hears a bunch of screaming and yelling. He looks at me. Some of the veteran guards and younger guards came down to the area and all of them shake hands with me.
Guard: It’s Josh Dean! Man, my family loves you. Can I possibly……….
Well you know me, I never miss a autograph!
Marty: Well that’s why you were the Superstar!
I signed the pad and hand it back to the guard. Marty steps in.
Marty: Ok guys, that’s enough. Josh can I get a word with you.
Marty pulls me over to the side. Like a proud father would be, he is grinning from ear to ear, as he looks me over, seeing what I’ve made of myself.
Marty: Man look at you Josh. I always knew you’d make something out of yourself.
And look at you. Is it just me or do you run this joint now?
Marty: I do actually. I got moved up, …….. about a year after your last stint.
Wow! I’m so proud of you Marty.
Marty: I’m so proud of you too Josh! I watch the shows every week. It’s amazing the things you do. Robbie would be proud. …have you?
My face turned to a solemn look. I didn’t want him to know what I was thinking at this point about that. I just wanted him to think everything was cool. But he knew, and he stared with those stone grey eyes. I knew he was going to break me, so I broke down.
Not since. I just can’t bring myself to do it yet. But I will.
Marty puts his arm around my shoulder. It was comforting with a man that has to be tough as well to be so caring.
Marty: You are a good man Josh. And I called you man.
Thanks Marty. I had to do some growing up, but I did it.
Marty and I walk back over as the other guards are talking amongst themselves.
Marty, guys. I’ve got a few appearances that I’ve got to make. I’ve really got to be heading out!
Marty: I’ll walk you out.
I exchange handshakes with all of the guards and say my goodbyes. Marty walks with me as we exit the building. As we leave, there is a ruckus that the other guards go attend to. We walk to the Honda Civic. We are outside of the car.
Marty: Josh, your past isn’t an issue anymore. You’ve been holding it in for five years. It’s time to let it go. My brother is dead, yes. But life goes on. You have to keep moving on, and you haven’t done that yet. You can do it.
And I will. Thank you Marty. I will keep you in touch.
Marty: You better invite me to when you get a title shot!
JD: Are you kidding me, only the best! You are gonna be there in a VIP private jet my man!
Marty embraces me in an emotional hug. We separate and I open the door and climb in. I starts the engine up and roll down the window.
Marty: Be safe out there! Take care of yourself Superstar! And don’t be a stranger!
I salute Marty and then put the car in reverse. I back out and then put it in drive. I drive out of the gate as Marty watches me go about my way. I look at the sky and smile. A tear comes to my eye as I see in my rear view mirror Marty turn around and goes back inside of the Salem Boys Detention Center.
Message to Kurt Burton
Kurt Burton, I don’t think we’ve been formally introduced. My name is Josh Dean. I’m going to make it short and simple and say that after Felo De Se, you’ll know that, because then, it won’t be a secret anymore, because that is what I am, WFWF best kept secret.
But I’m not here to talk about that Kurt. No no, because see, while you know nothing about me, I know plenty about you. I know that you had a troubled home life, much like I did. You and your father haven’t spoken in a long time Kurt, and we know that. But Kurt, you know what happens when you don’t forgive others and hold such a grudge like you have with your father Kurt. When it is time that you decide to finally bury the hatchet, it’s too late.
Kurt, I know I got you heated by talking about your father, but I did it so that you can think about that no matter how bad you have it or had it, someone else had it worse. So Kurt, while now you want to beat me to a pulp, I want you to think about what I said.
Message to Thunder
Thunder, like your tag team partner, I know plenty about you. I know you like to flaunt money, just because you have it. I think someone quoted you as saying, when a man is face to face with money he makes the right decision. What decision is that? Is it the decision to do things that favor the outcome for you?
Thunder, it is this greed that thinking you can buy friends that will lead to your downfall. No doubt that you’ve probably paid off The Revolution to put up with your ass, and right now you are sitting pretty because of it. But let me play advocate here. Let me give you something to think about. See while you may have all of that now…………
What happens when the bank closes, and the money runs out? Where are those so called friends then? Thunder, they always say keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. I’d think about that quote when you’re stepping through the ropes. See you both at Felo De Se.
