I am a wrestling fan and last time I checked I was real. I don't watch WWE or TNA anymore (haven't in about 3 years) But I subscribe to WWE 24/7 and I buy many DVD's of the superstars from the past that I enjoy watching and hearing about. I guess I'm just not much of a "Sports Entertainment" fan. I really dig the older territorial days. I still order the Royal Rumble every year and have never missed one (same with King of the Ring until it was canceled) I own about 150 classic figures and "I-think-they-are-classics" figures. I keep up to date on the current programs/landscape through the net (read the show recaps) in case anything grabs my attention.
I don't know what that makes me. Not overly concerned about it either.

A wrestling fan to me is someone who not only watches it but understands what it means. It's more than just a show, it's a craft and an art form. It's the most historic figure in the world. It's the one ancient monument that will never become extinct. I believe that as long as there is a human race, there will be wrestling.

I've been watching WWF, WWE, WCW, WCCW, NWA, TNA, ECW, SMW, USWA...etc for 23 years.
I believe that I am as "real" a wrestling fan as you can get. Everyone in my life knows me as "The Wrestling Guy".
I support the industry no matter what the news media has to say about it. I get into heated arguments with friends when they tell me that wrestling is "fake".
I take offense that the media is quick to judge WWE for steriod abuse when 77 former NFL players have died in the past 7 years. Most of which were between 40 & 50 years old and most of which died of heart attacks. I take great offense when the industry I love is attacked.
But most of all, I think a "REAL" wrestling fan can sit there and watch and be entertained. For me, watching wrestling is re-living my childhood. It's being able to "mark-out" when the "bad guy" finally loses his world title to the "good guy".
One last point.....I also think the definition of a "real" wrestling fan is having a terrible feeling in the pit of your stomach when you get a text message Monday night from your good friend who is also a "real" wrestling fan that reads "RIP Benoit & Woman"...or another text message from the same friend a few months earlier that read "RIP BAM BAM"...

I'm sorry, but the comment about being able to watch a technical match like Benoit vs. Angle and being able to appriciate it means absolutely nothing about being a wrestling fan. A wrestling fan is simply someone who enjoys wrestling. Thats the problem with these forums and wrestling in general. People say others are "true" wrestling fans because they enjoy something different. Even if your a 10 year old kid that goes crazy when John Cena wins a match, your a true wrestling fan. Just because someone doesn't like technical wrestling or "strong" wrestling, doesn't mean they aren't a "true" wrestling fan. Simply put... if you enjoy wrestling, you are a "true" wrestling fan. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. - Triple S You hit the nail on the head. Also, I think anyone who is deeply saddened, like most of us, when things like this happen with people like Benoit, and Eddie, are true wrestling fans.

People here are NOT true wrestling fans. I think I am though. People here are all like saying "This story-line is so intellectually- disabled" If you like story-lines watch a soap opera. WWE is a soap opera when they arent in the ring. TNA is cool. I just don't like there ring so much. I can't really watch all the indies because I dont have fight channel to watch ROH, but I wacth some on youtube

A real wrestling fan is one who forms his/her own opinions on wrestlers. There somewhat of a rarity these days.

What exactly do you mean when you say you arnt a real fan if you belive everything WWE tells you? They do everything they can to spin the truth into a positive impact on them. Just as they are doing with the Benoit situation saying steroids aren't involved. Everything WWE says is done in an attempt to place blame on someone or something else and or to make them look better. Often WWE looks stupid and does stupid things. They have dedicated fans who aren't intelligent because they accept everything no matter how stupid it is.

A real wrestling fan is someone who enjoys wrestling. They can be Cena fans, only watch WWE, prefer technical wrestling/ brawling whatever, watch only TNA or only watch Indies or Japan groups whatever. Provided you can sit down and watch the wrestling you like and enjoy it you're a wrestling fan regardless of what others might think.
The problem is people get a bit of knowledge and start looking down on other fans, in this case the obvious example is WWE. Yet all the fans who prefer ROH or Noah etc only became wrestling fans because of WWE. I'm confident most of these fans got into wrestling originally by watching WWE/F back in the day.

That can sit through a technical match like benoit vs angle, bret vs owen etc. and likes those kinds of matches Not just sit though. You have to be able to enjoy it and appreciate it. I sit through womens matches...doesnt mean I like them. Nah mean? Thats what I meant

You'll probably get a million different answers as to what a true wrestling fan is, but for me personally:
A true wrestling fan is someone who can appreciate the dedication an athlete like a pro wrestler has put into his/her craft to entertain fans. Without fail the first thing any non-wrestling fan says is "why do you watch this? It's FAKE" ~ but they don't get the point. Yes it's scripted, but the effort it takes to perform night in and night out is admirable to me. And these guys do get hurt, physically, emotionally - non-wrestling fans will never understand that.
I appreciate pro wrestlers and what they do for us.

Well you don't have to worry about being a 'real' wrestling fan because there's so many styles that it really just becomes what you yourself prefers. I'm a fan, and whilst I can appreciate a good technical match (e.g. Kurt Angle, Benoit), when it comes down to it, I'd much prefer to see a match full of spots (e.g. AJ Styles, Jeff Hardy). Some may say I can't appreciate 'real' wrestling, cause arguabley, said wrestlers are simply gymnasts but it's untrue - you like what you like. Aslong as you become familiar and can appreciate different styles, it becomes what you prefer that makes you a real wrestling fan.

I think it would be someone who has a real understanding of the Wrestling Business, someone who can appreciate all kinds of Wrestling Styles, and has a good memory of past events.

I'll just give you my opinion:
I consider myself to be a real wrestling fan. I consider anyone that takes the time to bother signing up in their own time to a wrestling figure website, to be a real wrestling fan.
People who put their money into buying the merchandise.. people who stay up late to watch it.. people who make any tiny sacrifice for it.. are real wrestling fans to me.
Wrestling fans are usually defined as "marks" and "smarks".
However, that doesnt mean anything anymore.
John Cena is a great example:
If you boo John Cena.. your not a real wrestling fan. If john Cena's style doesnt appeal to you.. suck it up! get over it and grow up. Cena keeps his opponents safe when he gets in the ring. he represents the company at press conferences, he puts on solid matches and even tries to drag a good match out of Khali. John Cena kills himself to please the fans. and outside the ring, he is a true gentleman.
People who say "Chris Benoit is a cold blooded murderer and nothing else" arent real wrestling fans. yes Benoit killed, but that doesnt warrant for us to say "ok chris, the last 22 years of your life where you broke your neck for each and every single one of us no longer matters".. because a real wrestling fan would realize that Chris Benoit didnt follow standards in the ring.. chris Benoit set the damn standards!
To me, a true wrestling fan is someone who can appreciate the effort these men put into keeping us happy. the constant struggle. the never-ending pain.
whether you like to jump off the sofa in excitement when you see a five knuckle shuffle.. or you give a round of applause after a one hour Ric Flair match... if you appreciate what these men have done for you.. if you can look at these almost super human men.. and realize that they have given up everything to entertain you.. that, to me.. is when you are...
a true wrestling fan...

Anyone who watches RAW, Smackdown, ECW, TNA consistenty (despite all the crap recently). Anyone who has spent money on ppvs or bought anything relating to WWE, TNA, ROH or supports their local indy fed (PWG shoutout) . Someone who has gone to a live event or ppv. Someone who has watched some Japanese wrestling matches. Someone who cries or gets excited and yells at the tv when their favorite superstar wins a match or does something awesome.
If you have done at least 2 of those things mentioned above and think you are a wrestling fan, then you probably are.

Someone who knows it isn't real yet can enjoy it anyway. Not like the "kids" running around saying "WWE is so fake thats why I watch TNA instead". And someone who understands how the business works. Not complaining because Cena is the champ because they know he brings in money. Ithink if a perosn knows that and can really enjoy wrestling no matter what they are a real wrestling fan.
