[News Update] Update on the Death of Sherri Martel
Rick Karle, WBRC Sports Director, joined Greta Van Susteren Thursday night to provide an update on the Sensational Sherri Martel case. Homicide investigators in Alabama want to speak to Martel's husband Robert Schrull again about the timeline on the day Martel died. Schrull claimed he found Martel's body on the floor inside their home, while the family claims she collapsed on her porch. Investigators are saying this case has nothing to do with the recent Chris Benoit tragedy, nor do they have anything in common. Karle also talked to Martel’s sister Vickie, and she is upset that toxicology and autopsy reports will be made available in the Benoit case first, as Sherri died before Benoit. Toxicology reports, in Martel’s case, may not be available for up to one year. The cause of death in this case is still unknown.
On June 15, 2007, Sensational Sherri Martel passed away at her mother's residence in Birmingham, AL. She was 49 years old. Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer stated on his Wrestling Observer Live radio show that Martel's passing was a result of a possible drug abuse, and that the case was still under investigation by law enforcement. On June 19, 2007, police confirmed that Martel did not die of natural causes, but foul play was not suspected. A cause of death for Martel will not be determined until her autopsy and toxicology reports are completed which may take 5-6 months. Based on what is known, Martel had gone to bed at her mother's home (where she was living recently) because she wasn't feeling well. Her husband said he found her unresponsive inside the home later that afternoon while other family members claim she collapsed on the porch.
