Chris Benoit Toxicology Report: Xanax, Hydrocodone, Steroids

Jul 17, 2007
The Chris Benoit toxicology reports are in. This afternoon, the state medical examiner at Georgia Bureau of Investigation headquarters in DeKalb County has revealed the results.
Dr. Chris Sperry -- Chief Med Examiner (GA Bureau of Investigation) announced that autopsies were performed on all three members of the Chris Benoit family.
Nancy Benoit -- There were 3 different drugs found in Nancy's system. One was hydrocodone (aka loretab or lorset), hydromorphone (dilaudid) (a breakdown product of hydrocodone), and xanax. All three drugs were at therapeutic, not toxic levels. They also found a blood alcohol level of .184, which could clearly be due to body decomposition. It was not possible to say how much was in blood at time of death.
Daniel Benoit -- Chris Benoit's son tested positive for xanax, which is relatively elevated and is not normally given to child. Based upon their findings, the boy was sedated at the time of or just before he was murdered.
Chris Benoit -- Wrestler Chris Benoit tested positive for xanax and hydrocodone, as did his wife, and the levels were in the therapeutic range for normal usage. Tests of his urine found the only steroid he had been taking was testerone, discovered at a level of 207 micrograms per liter, which is slightly elevated. There was no other articifial steroids present in system
The most significant thing was the finding that Daniel had been sedated at the time of the killing. Also, no evidence of illegal steroids was surprising, and the presence of testosterone may have indicated he was being treated for physical "insufficiency."
Police still maintain that Chris Benoit killed his wife, Nancy, and their 7-year-old son at their suburban Atlanta home last month before taking his own life.
There were steroids found in the Benoit home which led to much speculation over whether or not they might have played a part in the killings. Authorities hoped the toxicology reports would reveal to them if "roid rage" was a contributor or if that theory can be put to rest.
It is the belief of some experts that excessive steroid use can cause fits of rage and depression in users. Tests have also been conducted on Nancy Benoit and their son.
World Wrestling Entertainment has maintained from the very beginning that it would be premature to sensationalize that steroids had played any part in the alleged double murder-suicide. The WWE claims that Benoit had passed his last drug test.
