Actually I really don't know what he is talking about. Is anyone else sick of these real names. Their are a lot of bad gimmicks and names.

If Bobby Lashley went by Franklin...I would cheer for him just for that fact. Identical.

Obviously there is a reason for this. WWE wants to own the name. They don't want to make a superstar big using their real name so if they somehow get released and they can go to TNA with that big name. For example, if Bobby Lashley ever got released, he can't use that name. No one knows Bobby Lashley by any other name other than that. That's just the way it is. This is the reason why they changed Dan Rodimer's name too to Dan Rodman.

Yeah my bad. Vince's limo exploding and killing him instantly wasn't over the top... Wrestling will be and always has been over the top, regardless of what year the calendar shows. The Great Khali is a "gimmick" name. Look at how much he sucks. He isn't even over. And wrestling is not over the top. Storylines from WWE tend to be stupid and over the top, but that has nothing to do with wrestling itself. Oh come on, despite what ROH and various Japanese promotions may tell you, wrestling isn't about Niko Nakawarihashi wrestling a sixty minute sports contest with Jefferson McDonald for the Pure Mat Grappling Title. Predetermined professional wrestling began as a circus act in the early 1900s with Billy Sandow, Ed Lewis and Toots Mondt -- the Gold Dust Trio. This whole "pure wrestling" concept is rather lame.

Yes it started as a circus act, but like everything else it starts to evolve and change. And I never claimed wrestling is all about grappling. Their are different genres and style of wrestling.

Wrestling is a passion play for children and the mentally handicapped, and it makes my brain hurt that so many online wrestling fans can't grasp that and hold onto this PRO WRESTLING=SERIOUS BUSINESS bullcrap.
Get over yourself, already.

wrestling is like a circus act and thy should use more gimmick names. I agree with the threadstarter completely.

It's because stage names like Hulk Hogan, The Ultimate Warrior, and "The Macho Man" in todays wrestling would be considered too over the top and unrealistic. Wrestling has since gone for more of a realistic approach while keeping some stage names such as The Undertaker (only because he's been there scince the 90's and it works), Kane, Edge, Triple H but if you notice these names work because their modern (with the exception of Triple H).

I think it's the worst with names like John Morrison or Kenny Dykstra, where the WWE actually expects us to believe those are their real birth names. It's just insulting with stuff like that... I think the lack of "gimmick names" so to speak is also attributed to the fact that the WWE can't build characters in general. nothing will ever beat Hugh G. Rection Wasn't that Rene Dupree?

What's worse is people that use first and last names aren't they're real names either. Bobby Lashley's first name is Franklin for example. Nobody would take him seriously if his first (ring) name was Franklin. Not like they do now but.. I wish Mickie would wrestle as Alexis Laree again. Such an awesome name.

For the most part, I hate gimmick names.
