I got this from another user on the iMPACT Community but I feel it's a good read. I agree with everything he says. I think Orton's alright but I'm not that big of a fan so here ya go. Comment on it.
Okay in my opinion Randy Orton could've been the future. Randy Orton could've been the rightful holder of the WWE or World Heavyweight title. Randy Orton could've been the future of Raw or Smackdown. Randy Orton could've been the top draw. What happened to Randy Orton is one of the saddest and most illogical things to happen in modern pro wrestling history, and very often his mishandlement is being over-looked. People tend to think that Randy Orton is not a draw, and that Randy Orton is just a bland character who was over rushed. Wrong and wrong. Let's take a look at how WWE handled Mr. RKO.
---Vengeance 2004---
The Intercontinental Championship was on the line and Randy Orton's seven month title reign was being threatned by non other then future partner "Rated R Superstar" Edge. The two had feuded and Edge challenged Orton for the title. Orton a hot heel was greeted by tons of cheers, while Edge was being booed despite being a face. The match ended when Edge managed to beat Randy, and capture the Intercontinental Championship. Randy Orton was ready for prime time, WWE was begging for a hot heel, enter Randall Keith Orton.
---SummerSlam 2004---
"The Legend Killer" wins a battle royal, and becomes the number-one contender to the already stale World Heavyweight Champion Chris Benoit. A match at SummerSlam is confirmed where Randy promises to dethrow Benoit as the next World Heavyweight Champion. By doing so Randy Orton also becomes the youngest World Heavyweight Champion. Randy promised to beat Benoit at SummerSlam, and no one was going to prevent him from his "Date with Destiny". Randy already became the hottest heel and made good on his promise by beating Benoit in an excellent bout to capture the World Heavyweight Championship. Randy Orton has now re-writen records, and became the youngest champ breaking Brock Lesnar's record. Already tired of Triple H as the top heel and champion, and already bored with Benoit's title reign, this was the best choice, as no one else was ready to carry the company.
---SummerSlam-Unforgiven---
So now Randy Orton becomes the World Heavyweight Champion, and a lot of questions need to be answered. The most important question was, what will happen to Evolution? Will Randy dethrow Hunter as the new leader? After all no way was Triple H comfortable with fellow Evolution member holding HIS World Heavyweight Title. After all Randy Orton was such an excellent heel that he sky-rocketed to the top and won the top title, it's a very big achievement. Randy was cocky, Randy was arrogant, and Randy was aggressive. Basically Randy was a natural heel, and was a horrible face. Orton debuted as a face, and his characted sucked, the only thing he was living of was the fact that he was a third-generation star, but now as a heel Randy made a name for himself. So the logical thing would be for WWE to keep Orton a heel, and turn "The Game" face. Apparently common sense is a rarity among the WWE bookers, because the night after Randy beat Benoit, Hunter and Evolution turned on Randy. So now the cocky, arrogant, aggressive Randy was a face. I'm sorry but that was the dumbest thing I have ever seen. How the hell can Randy be a face? Everything he accomplished was as a heel, fans were anticipating title defenses by a HEEL Randy. Fans were anticipating World Heavyweight Title feuds with a HEEL Randy. Fans were awaiting PPV main-events with a HEEL Randy, and now they turn him face? Now at the time Randy was already catching heat for being too young, and too inexperienced. BULL-[Censored], Randy wasn't too young or inexperienced, the problem with Orton is that he was over as a HEEL, and now in the midst of his proving stages, they kill the charcater by turning him face? You don't even have to be a wrestling fan to realize how horrible the booking is. So one must wonder WHY THE HELL WOULD THEY TURN HIM FACE? There had to be a GREAT reason. Did Benoit convince Randy to drop Evolution? Did Randy step up to Triple H? Did Randy disagree with Evolution's tactics? Nope Randy was a hero, because Evolution turned on him and kicked his ass. In a weird kind of way, that's supposed to make Evolution face, for kicking out the cocky, arrogant heel. Now everybody is supposed to cheer Randy, because Evolution rejected him. The WWE bookers must've been thinking "Our World Heavyweight Champion was now a reject, that will be the biggest draw". Then 3 weeks later Randy Orton drops the title to Triple H. So now he was a reject and a loser. So why did Randy lose the title to Triple H? Because WWE writers were saying Randy isn't clicking too well as a face. They decided it's better for a face to chase a heel champion. Well it's true, the only problem was that there was no reason to turn Randy into a face to begin with. They created this puzzle, and now made it even more puzzling.
---Fall of 2004---
So WWE decides that it's best for our former Rejected World Heavyweight Champion who happens to be a loser as well to keep his persona. That's right we are going to have an Arrogant good guy, who happens to be the top face. Now creative thought Randy would get over like Rock did, what they didn't realize is the fact that while being an arrogant good guy, Rock had catchphrases, and his eyebrow, and his mannerisms. So Rock used all those and got over, Randy didn't have any of that, all Randy did was do his RKO move, and kill legends. So WWE decided Randy Orton would get over as Rock did by spitting in the face of legends, and nailing his RKO finisher. So Randy who was insulting the fans a month ago, was now supposed to be cheered like a God, because Evolution kicked him out, and then Triple H beat him for the title too. Our arrogant good guy was starting to get booed, worse then when he was a heel. Then our genious WWE creative staff decides to keep Randall and HHH separted until WrestleMania, basically what they're saying is that they are not going to push Randy until April. Genious . So Triple H beats Randy, now what? WWE has to keep them separated until WrestleMania, so they decided to have Randy feud with other members of Evolution. Our reject/loser/arrogant hero called out Ric Flair, and listed him all of "Nature Boy's" accomplishments, and begged him to leave Evolution. WWE did this many times, they had somebody praise Flair, and ask him to leave HHH, only for Flair to turn against them later on, so you'd think Randy would know all the tricks by now, considering that he was a member of Evolution for a long time. Apparently the loser, the reject, and the arrogant hero was also stupid, because later in the show while Randy was facing Batista, Flair gave Randall a low blow, and Batista picked up the win. Vince must've gave the creative team a bonus for having our Arrogant/Reject/Hero/Loser who happens to be stupid as well get jobbed out. A month ago RKO was the hottest heel, now he was a lame hero who kept on being rejected by his friends, and then being beat up by them too.
---Taboo Tuesday 2004---
The reject was now facing the 55-year-old Ric Flair in a steel cage match. The match was good, and was bloody as hell, at the end Randy beats Flair, and the two ... SHAKE HANDS! Ric Flair the person who turned on Randy twice in a matter of two months, was shaking hands with Randall. Our former champ was a WUSS! Things only get worse from here, as RKO officially jobbed out to all 3 members of Evolution the next week on Raw, when Flair beat him at the age of 55. The pre-match stipulation required our Arrogant/Wussy/Reject/Stupid/Hero never to get a title shot at Triple H. So WWE's creative team's plan was to have Randy Orton to try to be friends with Evolution but they keep on turning on him and rejecting him and beating him up, BRAVO .
---New Year's Revolution 2005---
So the arrogant, jobbing, gimmickless, gullible hero is not over with the audience, what the hell does WWE do now? They have Triple H beat all 5 guys at once in the Elimination Chamber match. Although Randy did beat HHH a week before the Chamber. How? Everybody interfered, and I mean everybody Jericho, Benoit, Batista, Edge, etc, etc. But why would they put that rematch on free TV, wasn't this supposed to be the main-event of WrestleMania? Wasn't this a dream match? Wasn't this our destination that we have building for? So the experiment was done, and WWE realized that no one wants to see our jobbing hero who lost again headline WrestleMania.
---Royal Rumble 2005---
Next night on Raw HHH called RKO a loser, and RKO's respons was that he is not a loser, and that he has proof. You know what was his proof? A video showing how HHH didn't help Batista last night at NYR. HOW THE HELL DOES THAT PROOF THAT RANDY IS NOT A LOSER?! So then Orton had to beat Batista in a dirty way, after HHH interfered and distracted a HEEL Batista by trying to attack Orton. Orton then challenges HHH at the Royal Rumble and loses CLEAN. That's right clean. Nail in the coffin. Orton had a concussion, and that was the reason he lost. Of course the concussion was sold for a week, and then no one would remember it.
So folks there you have it our Randy Orton. I feel very angry by this as I feel Randy had so much promise and so much talent to be killed like this. Randy was ready, and Randy was experienced enough. Randy had the mic skills, Randy had the in-ring ability, what a shame.
