Cyndi Lauper & Wrestling
Cyndi Lauper appeared as a guest VJ on MTV with Captain Lou Albano in 1984.
At the 1985 Grammy's, Hulk Hogan escorted Cyndi Lauper to the award ceremony.
She appeared again with Hulk Hogan and Wendi Richter as guest VJs in 1985.
Cyndi Lauper escorted "Rowdy" Roddy Piper to a Hollywood move premiere in June of 1987.
At the beginning of her solo career, Cyndi Lauper participated in some wrestling events, even being a manager. What is less known is that all of the wrestling bouts with Wendy Richter, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, among others, were actually MS fund raisers. Cyndi Lauper, Dave Wolf, and Captain Lou Albano organized the events and raised over four million dollars for research.
Cyndi participated in women's wrestling, assisting Wendi Richter ringside for a total of four televised matches. The first match, billed as "The Brawl to Settle it All," was aired live on MTV in June of 1984 and was repeated, in 1985 frequently, with all the press hype. Basically, Cyndi Lauper was invited on a wrestling program, "The Piper's Pit," for wrestler, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, to interview her. Her association with Captain Lou Albano at this point made her known to the wrestling fans. When "Rowdy" Roddy Piper interviewed her, Captain Lou Albano snuck out from behind the set and they both began insulting her and women. Cyndi Lauper, who was offended, turned violent and began hitting them both. Captain Lou Albano then made wild claims that he made Cyndi Lauper famous and managed her career. Cyndi Lauper retorted by challenging him to find a female wrestler to wrestle a woman she would manage. Captain Lou Albano went to the WWF women's champion, The Fabulous Moolah, and Cyndi Lauper found a wrestler, Wendi Richter. They hyped the match up constantly on wrestling shows and MTV. Wendi Richter ultimately met The Fabulous Moolah in the ring and won the women's championship belt by defeating The Fabulous Moolah, and Cyndi Lauper even jumped in and slugged The Fabulous Moolah, at one point in the match. A prior agreement to the match was that if Captain Lou Albano lost the match, he had to publicly apologize to Cyndi Lauper. At that point, Captain Lou Albano turned good and together with Hulk Hogan and Wendi Richter set up an award ceremony for Cyndi Lauper and her contributions to wrestling during one of the matches in December of 1984. Once Hulk Hogan and Wendi Richter temporarily exited the ring, Captain Lou Albano publicly apologized to her and presented her with a gold record. At that point, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper snuck in the ring, smashed the gold record over Captain Lou Albano's head and kicked Cyndi Lauper in the face, sending her rolling across the ring. When Hulk Hogan came running to Cyndi Lauper's rescue, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper left the ring and Hulk Hogan challenged him to a new match to defend Cyndi Lauper's honor: "The War to Settle the Score."
Wendi Richter's opponent, at Wrestlemania 3, was a woman named Leilani Kai, who was managed by the legendary Fabulous Moolah. During the match, The Fabulous Moolah tried to get involved in the match by attacking Wendi Richter. So, Cyndi Lauper got involved and she started fighting Moolah on the outside the ring before the officials broke it up. Wendi Richter went on to defeat Leilani Kai for the WWF women's championship that night, and afterwards, Cyndi Lauper and Wendi Richter were dancing around the ring, celebrating, and showing off the title belt, which has become one of the best remembered pictures from any WrestleMania.
In February of 1985, the "War to Settle the Score" was to take place with Cyndi at ringside. However, The Fabulous Moolah was so desperately wanting both her title back and revenge on Cyndi Lauper, so she trained a new lady wrestler, Leilani Kai to wrestle Wendi Richter the night of the big match between Hulk Hogan and "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. Cyndi Lauper escorted Wendi Richter to the ring, as well, as The Fabulous Moolah did with Lelani Kai. However, The Fabulous Moolah was up to her dirty tricks, that night, and constantly interfered in the match. When Wendi Richter was prevailing, The Fabulous Moolah began viciously attacking Cyndi Lauper, and even choked her, until Cyndi Lauper fell to the ground. At that point, Wendi Richter went to help Cyndi Lauper, but Lelani Kai snuck up behind her to roll her up for the pin and win the championship belt. When Cyndi Lauper came to, she and Wendi Richter chased The Fabulous Moolah and Lelani Kai back to the dressing rooms.
During Wrestlemania 1, Wendi Richter won her title back with Cyndi Lauper began pounding The Fabulous Moolah outside the ring.
Essientally, the first Wrestlemania came together, in part, due to Cyndi Lauper's involvement in wrestling, which was now at its peak in popularity.
Cyndi Lauper escorted Wendi Richter once more to ringside when The Fabulous Moolah wanted a re-match. However, The Fabulous Moolah had a document that "banned" Cyndi Lauper from ringside due to Cyndi Lauper's previous attacks on The Fabulous Moolah. Cyndi Lauper then had to sit backstage and watch from a television set. Wendi Richter beat The Fabulous Moolah once again, and Cyndi Lauper came running out to congratuate her. It was the last time Cyndi Lauper would escort Wendi Richter to ringside. Cyndi Lauper later got revenge backstage by shoving The Fabulous Moolah into a huge cake.
Cyndi Lauper used wrestlers numerous times in her early videos. Captain Lou Albano, of course, was in "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," "Time After Time," "She Bop," and both videos for "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough." Wendi Richter was the waitress that was blowing a bubble and singing the first verse in the video for "She Bop." She also appeared in The "Goonies 'R' Good Enough" videos as a cook in a vegetable stand at the Mom 'n' Pop's gas station. Andre the Giant, The Fabulous Moolah, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, the Iron Shiek, Nikolai Volkoff, and famous manager, "Classie" Freddie Blassie, all appeared as pirates in the "Goonies 'R' Good Enough," videos as well. Cyndi Lauper returned the favor by appearing in a WWF music video called "Land of a 1000 Dances," later in
1985. Her manager/boyfriend at the time, Dave Wolf, was also in the video and produced the Wrestling album on which the song was featured.
After 1985, Cyndi Lauper minimized her association with professional wrestling, and this caused the women's division in the WWF began losing steam without Cyndi Lauper's appearances. Wendi Richter still continued to wrestle, using "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" as her theme song, but without Cyndi Lauper at her side. She lost her championship title to The Fabulous Moolah in November of 1985. She still wrestled quite frequently but never had the hype and popularity she once had when Cyndi Lauper escorted her to ringside. The Fabulous Moolah remained the women's champion for a long time after regaining her belt.
In 1988, Cyndi Lauper and MTB held a Wild Island Carribbean Cruise contest and weekend with Cyndi Lauper, promoting "Vibes" and her "Hole in My Heart" (All the Way to China) single. Captain Lou Albano escorted her on the cruise ship, but that was the second to last time she was seen publicly with him.
The last time Cyndi Lauper and Captain Lou Albano were seen together, was in 1989 or 1990 when they made the Super Mario Brothers' show together: "Captain Lou is missing".
