I know the Wii/PS3 thread down below got locked for whatever reason, but I'm hoping this doesn't. Alright, so, with Christmas time rolling around, I got all kinds of people asking me what I want. See, the thing is, I don't know. For the past few months, I've been aware that I'm going to need to upgrade my system soon (PS2 ), but I figured I could push it off for a while. Now, with my roommate getting a Wii, and the fact that they're near impossible to find, that's out of the question. So, that leaves me with 360 or Wii. I've typically been a Sony kind of guy, but, the lack of big titles kind of bums me out. But the crap like the red rings on the 360 irk me too. Oh, and was I going to ask my roommate's mom for Rock Band, probably, as she's not going to want to buy me a new system. So, yes, discuss experiences/tech problems/etc., as it would help a lot. <3, Geoff

I own two Xbox 360's and haven't had a single technical issue with either one of them. I didn't get my first one on launch because I'm anti-Sony or anything of the nature, it's just because it came out first and since I purchased it I haven't really felt the need to buy a PS3. Back in the day I bought a PS2 because it came out first, and it took me forever to finally buy an Xbox. I just tend to pick one and stick with it for a while. Whatever.
Anyway, without putting down the system I don't own, I'll say overall I really like the 360. By now the games library is pretty huge, and if you really want to you can expand it more with original Xbox games, although that's not really my fancy.
Xbox Live is basically the make or break feature. After you've played for an amount of time while connected to live, playing a game or system that's not connected just feels really awkward. I pretty much always want to be able to send messages and check up on my friends list if I feel like it. It adds a huge social element to the console itself, and even moreso to games like Rock Band. If you don't have anybody in the immediate area to play with, you can just invite an XBL friend, and for a game as people-friendly as Rock Band it makes a lot of difference, and can add a lot more fun.
And without rambling on for an eternity I'll just add that with the Xbox 360, you can do more than just play games. There's all sorts of stuff like downloadable movies/TV shows, and you can make your own overarching music playlist if you don't like the default one the game chooses. You can check out Xbox.com for a crapload of stuff I missed or just didn't remember.
I don't know if anyone here has both a PS3 and a 360, but I'm sure graze, XZeroX, or one of our other PS3 owners would be happy to give you the PS3 rundown.

Go for 360 it is very rare for you to get a new system that has the red ring of death. They usually only happen with 360's bought in dec 2005 to oct 2006. In the long run the 360 will have better games, better online play and less kinks.

As a PS3 owner, I'll try to state a case for getting a PS3 (I might win a case, unlike Jack Thompson, yeah, I so went there)
I'll deal with the games first, because, that why you buy a PS or a Xbox. I'll be honest, the PS3 doesn't have that many "AAA" exclusives right now, like Bioshock, Halo and Gears of Wars. Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, Resistance and Motorstorm are great games. Plus you have the old PS exclusives like MGS, God Of War, GT and Final Fantasy. Not to mention the Playstation Store has some great new "arcade" ish type games, like Everyday Shooter, Pain, Flow and Calling All Cars. You're not going to find alot of arcade classics like XBLA has, but you can get some great Midway games like MKII and Joust. Plus you can still download demo's, wallpapers and themes for the PS3 dash board for free.
As for online gaming. If you're into online gaming, get Warhawk, it's a must. The Playstation Network (PSN) is free, but it's just the basics, if allows you a friends list and lets you play online for free. It's not as feature deep as XBL, but it does the basics of letting you play online. When Playstation Home launches sometime in 08, it will be like XBL for the PS3, a central online community which will make life easier joining games and chatting and it will have trophies, which I'm guessing is a PS3 version of achievements.
PS3 pretty much has everything you need out of the box. You don't need to purchase a wireless adapter like you do for the 360, PS3 has built in Wifi. The only extra part you might need, if you have a HDTV are either component cables or a HDMI cable, other then those, PS3 has everything in the box. Also keep in mind that a rumble feature PS3 controller will be coming out sometime in March-April, so if you really need rumble, you might want to purchase one.
Since you mentioned you have a PS2, if you want to keep playing your PS2 games on the PS3, becareful with which PS3 your getting. The 40GB PS3, the $399 model, doesn't allow you to play PS2 games on your PS3. If you want a 40GB, keep your old PS2 around. Other then that, the 60GB and 80GB models will play PS2 games.
If any PS3 owners have anything they want to add, That maybe I forgot, go ahead. Good luck with your choice. Whether you get a 360 or PS3, your still getting a great system with lots of games to enjoy!

Nice, decent replies. I'm still not really sure which one I would go for, if any, right now. See, because if I was going for a PS3, I'd probably be going for the 40GB model. Not that it matters, my PS2 is in fine condition. The game selection for PS3 looks kinda crap to me....until FFXIII comes out. <3 And with the 360, playing XBox games is nice, except I don't have any at all. Uhhh....what else....and given that I don't have much money, I probably wouldn't buy many games for either immediately (which is the main factor in me getting one or not), so, eh. Also, Pizza, you have RB, yes? Do you know if the RB 360 guitar would work on GH2 for 360? My girlfriend's brother has a 360 and GH2. I COULD TOTALLY BORROW IT AND GET MY GAMER SCORE UP OMGGGG.

The RB guitar doesn't work with Guitar Hero. The PS3 is a wonderful machine that just suffers from the current lack of support and lackluster high profile releases and half assed ports. Things will get better. It's a shame that the 360 doesn't come stock with a WiFi and HD DVD support. And the fact that not all systems come with hard drives is lame. Really, it's just going to have to come down to what exclusives you want. I still like the 360 more, just because of the interface and community they've established with XBL and it's Marketplace.

I love my 360. I can certainly contend that, if you want to match the features between the two console, you will definitely end up paying more with the 360. However, I don't use Wi-Fi and I don't use the HD-DVD player, so the 360 works better for me since, especially in comparison to the PS3's price when it came out, it's a better value since I'm not paying extra for anything I don't use.
The major flaw with the PS3, in terms of games, is that since the Xbox 360 is so much easier to make games for that the PS3 version of games will often be gimped. Orange Box on PS3 is the the most recent example though, according to 1UP's podcast, where in some situations it runs just slow enough, frame-rate wise, that it's noticeable.
It really should come down to what games are out or are coming out soon for these systems that you want. Final Fantasy and MGS4 are nearly guaranteed to never come out on 360. It's definitely possible that they may come, but if you really want to play those games, then you will definitely be safer to get the PS3 since those are guaranteed to come out on PS3.

As much as I am pumped for FF13, I don't know if I could bring myself to pay MORE money for a system that I would want LESS, just for one game. I'm typically a Sony purist, but PS3 doesn't look like, in the long run, it would be worth it for me. Then again, there isn't alot for the 360, either. Halo and GoW and stuff like that can suck one.

Well, if you're getting Xbox Live Gold, then technically the 40 GB PS3 is the same price as the Premium 360, although, at least in America, the premium comes with two games right now.

When it comes to what I would get, I'm 99.9% sure it would be the 360 Premium, and the 40GB PS3.

I bought a PS3, as I grew up on Playstation, I like it.
My best friend has a 360, he brings it over every weekend when he stays here. I love it. I prefer a PS3, as it has all the games I've wanted to play on it, and I grew up with it. At the same time, if some one gave me a 360 as a gift, I'd love that too. I think they're both great.

Yeah Gold is what is required to play online, and is what costs the 50 bucks a year. Silver is free, but no online multiplayer. So yeah, if you don't want Xbox Live (and in which case shouldn't be getting a 360 anyway because Xbox Live is what gives the 360 its identity), then it is cheaper, but you also don't get a wi-fi connection or any sort of HD player. Though, the PS3 doesn't come with any HD cables, so I guess it kinda-sorta balances out concept-wise but not financially.

I own both, so I personally can tell you the 360 is the way to go. Online is amazing, as always with Xbox, being able to to have all features needed at a push of a button. I am not bashing the PS3, as it is a wonderful machine, but at this time it has nothing to back it. Usually systems come out every 4 years or so...and so far Sony hasn't really picked up and ran with the ball. Microsoft is holding its top spot, I'd go with the 360.

I'm stuck in the exact same position as you. I have a PS2 and cannot decide what to get.
For the 360 I'm still worried about the RROD, plus the longevity of the system since the 360 came out 4 years after the XBOX was made, the $50 online, and it seems like most of its great games are shooters.
For the PS3 I am worried about the lazyness of ports, as well as the lack of support. The amount of good games is thin but it has only been out for a year.
Plus since I'm in college I'm worried about one possibly getting stolen, especially the PS3. Even though the cheaper one is around the 360 price, I think more people think of it as an antique type thing.

Yeah. I don't live on my campus (that's not possible, anyways), so the odds of a new system being stolen is slim.
But yeah, as much as the PS3's game selection sucks, I can't think of many 360 games that I would want. I mean, I wouldn't mind playing Gh2 or 3 on the 360 for a gamer score, but I'm not going to throw down like 100 bucks EACH for two games I already have.
Blah.

I feel your pain lol, same exact situation. I think it is best to get neither at this point until there are enough games you want for one system that will really make you want it. If you are content with PS2 & GH, there is no point in upgrading. Just ask for $ instead so you can spend it on whatever you want.

It is really hard to make a choice. Every system has their pro's and their cons, and if you buy one system, your missing out on games for the other. I am happy with my Ps3, but honestly, I'd love to try Bioshock and Mass Effect, but IMO, it isn't enough to make me want a 360 yet.
