My version of games that were hyped to insanity that ended up being very horrible
In this post I will list one very bad over hyped game, and a game that was hyped and was actually very damn good. Mostly just negative as people like reading negative things much more than positive, but here I go.
History- I am not going to look up the games actual history on Wikipedia or any of that, but the history of my own experience.
When the PS2 first launched there were very few select games that magazines just boasted about. In these magazines were SSX, Twisted Metal Black, Red Faction, Smugglers Run, Orphan and The Summoner.
PS2, from what I remember had a very crapty launch and I had 3 games to choose from that were actually decent for a half year..I don't really know what good games came out after that half year, but half year seems about right on how long it took the PS2 to finally be fun.
One of the games I bought was this game called 'The Summoner" in which magazines and TV had been pushing a ton of promotion into as it was a massive game which was very long (which is what I was craving) but wow did this game just blow my mind, it was just dreadful.
The graphics, even for early PS2 were hard on the eyes. Sure it was massive, but when a game is massive, and shoves a lot of text at you with many side missions that you don't care about doing, things start to easily bug you. Especially when there are so many side missions you can't even find or keep track what your supposed to actually be doing. There were point in the game where I thought I was doing the 'main quest' of the game, only to find out I just did something for an old lady who then gave me 100 dollars for my task.
The battle system was absolutely horrible. First of all, I HATE waiting for my turn when I battle. I understand you can plan what you want making it strategic, but it's boring as hell and annoying. They took me to a complete new level of frustration when they decided to use the directional pad as your 'action' buttons in battle. So here I am, playing an annoying RPG with a crapty battle system, boring story, and crappy graphics. WHY was this game hyped so much? I'll never know, but it annoys me to this day!
There was only ONE good thing about this game, and it had NOTHING to do with the game itself. It was a secret little bonus thing you got after watching the credits which was watched by me and my friends more than the game itself.
Hidden Summoner video that was actually more interesting than the game itself
