Nirvana are only famous because of what Kurt did, I swear if he was still alive they would not be remembered so strongly. The sole good thing to come out of it, was the Foo Fighters. I will strongly disagree with that statement. Nirvana was a huge thing when they came out, causing an entire movement to explode into the mainstream. Cobain had a raw energy and a poetic writing ability that can't be denied. But anyway... Mercury brought AIDS awareness, though since people believed he was gay (only half right), it probably didn't do all that much. On the other hand, Cobain killed a movement that had become a fad with his death... So I think Kurt Cobain wins this one, if only by a little bit. On a personal note, these are two of my favorite musical artists of all time. Cobain for his poetry in song and Mercury for proving that pop artist was not an oxymoron.

I disagree, he didn't bring much awareness to Aids, primarily because he was gay. It was just another way for the Evangelicals to vilify gay people and call it their disease.
Magic brought way more attention to it than Freddy ever did, mostly because he was still a high profile basketball player and he was straight.
I honestly don't even remember when Freddy died, that's how forgotten his death was, but I remember distinctly when Cobain died and soon after that kids every where were picking up guitars trying to imitate his style.

for me Cobain. maybe the method made it more shocking. he was in his prime sorta and it was like what's the point of having that much success just to throw it all away. i felt like if he has all that and still doesn't want to live then what the hell am i gonna do. those were bad times.

"For example when we're back stage and the lights go out and the manic roar of the crowds begins., it doesn't affect me the way in which it did for Freddie Mercury, who seemed to love, relish in the the love and adoration from the crowd which is something I totally admire and envy."
Kurt Cobain's suicide letter.
