Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema have reached agreement to make J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit," a planned prequel to the blockbuster trilogy "The Lord of the Rings." Jackson
Peter Jackson is set to oversee the film adaptation of "The Hobbit."
Jackson, who directed the "Rings" trilogy, will serve as executive producer for "The Hobbit." A director for the prequel films has yet to be named.
Relations between Jackson and New Line had soured after "Rings," despite a collective worldwide box office gross of nearly $3 billion -- an enormous success. The two sides nevertheless were able to reconcile, with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM) splitting "The Hobbit" 50/50, spokemen for both studios said Tuesday.
"I'm very pleased that we've been able to put our differences behind us, so that we may begin a new chapter with our old friends at New Line," Jackson said in a statement. "We are delighted to continue our journey through Middle Earth."
Two "Hobbit" films are scheduled to be shot simultaneously, similar to how the three "Lord of the Rings" films were made. Production is set to begin in 2009 with a released planned for 2010, with the sequel scheduled for a 2011 release.

Yeah. I heard it on the 5:30 news. I hope they don't add some dumb ass Jar Jar like characters, if you know what I'm saying.

I'm so ing stoked to read this. I saw it earlier on cnn.com. Jackson is the only man alive who should be behind this project. Even if Clerks 2 totally raped the trilogy. Good thing we'll get to see both flicks before the world ends in 2012! lol

Jackson isn't directing it and Fran Walsh isn't writing it... Executive Producer credits don't mean sh*t

I'm happy about it. But annoyed that they are going to split it in two.

Well, seeing as i liked the Hobbit even more than LotR, I'm really excited about this... The original cartoon is what got me into the world of Middle Earth, followed by the book and then the trilogy.
I'm interested to see how they do 2 movies. I'm heard a couple of rumors which both sound pretty neat... but either way... We're getting the Hobbit on film!!!!!

Yeah. I heard it on the 5:30 news. I hope they don't add some dumb ass Jar Jar like characters, if you know what I'm saying. These LOTR prequels already exist. This isn't gonna be like George Lucas locking himself in his home studio and shitting out those three Star Wars scripts in a weekend.

Actually The Hobbit moves at a much better pace. The book it shorter than any of the 3 Lord of the Rings books. Which is why I think it's stupid to split it into 2 movies. It can easily be made in one 3 or more hour film.

Yeah I have on VHS, the old animated Hobbit film, I just like Clerks 2's take on LOTR. I've read all the books, the books are amazing, the movies, didn't get me too much. Though, the battle scene in Two Towers is one of my favorite battle scenes.
