While it's not totally about Captain America, I will mention the spoiler for #25 so close the window if somehow you've managed to miss the spoilers and want to read the issue
Has anyone noticed that Ed Brubaker is pulling the death card out ALOT lately? Of course, quite alot of the time its not true and it leads to the reveal 2 or 3 issues later.
I'm just going off his Marvel work here but that's look at the hyped deaths:
Red Skull - Returned!
Yeah, everyone was shocked when Red Skull was killed off early in Brubaker's run... despite all the discussion of "What the hell is Ed doing?" he returned a few issues later.
Foggy - Returned!
As soon as he took over Daredevil Foggy was killed only to be revealed as in witness protection. Their was alot of heat over this killing Daredevil's supporting cast, even though the majority of that heat was on Bendis as people thought it was happening in his last issue, not Ed's first.
Banshee - Still dead
Yup, he's still dead but if I remember correctly there was a hint in Deadly Genesis that he was still alive.
Nomad - Dead
Dead but no one made much of a fuss over this one.
There was a big cliffhanger in Captain America that Bucky would shoot either Captain America and Falcon, and most people decided that Falcon was going to die.
While he didn't kill him, he certainly brought Bucky back from the dead.
Now we have Cap.
Now, don't get me. I love Brubaker's writing so I'm not pulling it apart. I just find it odd that people are saying Captain America will return simply because its a comic and Captain America is A-List. There has been no mention of the fact Brubaker has killed off a few "Big" characters in the past 2 years and half of them have returned.
Is it just me, or if Bendis has done this we'd of had a lot of people bitching that "God, Bendis does this all the time. Do something new... we know he'll turn out to be alive in a few months"?
I find it odd that everytime Brubaker has done there is an uproar and no one stops to think if its just Bru's "Is he dead?" plot. His 2 biggest deaths have done been false, only 2 have stuck (Unless I've missed another).
I do think Roger's will return, although I do hope its when the next editorial change happens. If Joey Q and Brubaker are so into this, ride it out... don't take it back in a year.
