Just rewatched this show a few days ago, here's my review.
Razor Ramon vs. Bret Hart - Quarterfinal Match:
Now, their Royal Rumble 93 match is one of my favorite matches ever, and I prefer it to this. This match has a faster pace, and generally showcases Hart being able to adapt his style to gel well with Razor. Kinda cheesy finish, but other than that, an extremely good opener to this show.
Rating - ***3/4
Mr. Perfect vs. Mr. Hughes - Quarterfinal Match:
Hennig is known for being great, but to watch this match, you couldn't really tell it. It just kind of bored the crap out of me, but it was short, and to the point pretty much.
Rating - *
Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Jim Duggan - Quarterfinal Match:
About five minutes long, and as good as it could possibly be given the two involved. They managed to both look somewhat good here, and it's obvious this match didn't go long because of Duggan's involvement.
Rating - **
Tatanka vs. Lex Luger - Quarterfinal Match:
Well this is rare...a time limit draw in the WWF. Fifteen minutes, and to my surprise, this match is actually really good. The pre match stipulation that Luger must cover his forearm nerfs his forearm shot in a way, so he's pretty much screwed out of his biggest threat, which causes Tatanka to last longer than anyone ever expected he could. They asked for five more minutes, and we didn't get it. And it's a damn shame.
Rating - ***1/4
Mr. Perfect vs. Bret Hart- Semifinal Match:
This match, to me, is far superior to the SummerSlam 91 match. The wrestling is better, and it has more of a big match feel. Bret changes his style to work a technical match with Hennig, and this match showcases just how awesome Hennig is with the right opponent and if given the right about of time to work with. Bret takes a pretty nasty fall, and it's all good, because it works into the story of the main event. Great match overall.
Rating - ****1/2
Yokozuna vs. Hulk Hogan - WWF Championship:
Well...Yoko's a genuinely good worker, but he can't drag the Hulkster to a great match, this proves it. Hogan works his usual routine, even attempting to slam the challenger, it doesn't work. Finish sucked, the rest of the match was just all over the place. Definitely not a good sendoff for Hogan.
Rating - *1/4
The Smokin' Gunns and The Steiners vs. Money Inc. and The Headshrinkers:
Not too bad for as short as it was. The combination of Steiners/the opposing team instantly makes this at least watchable, and the Gunns actually seem worthwhile here, as well. It's a damn shame they pretty much didn't go anywhere until 1994, but what can you do?
Rating - **
Shawn Michaels vs. Crush - WWF Intercontinental Championship:
I love Crush, I really do. And HBK makes him look like he's actually a viable contender to the IC title, which in hindsight was stupid considering a month later Yoko pretty much killed his push. Crush steps out of being the generic new Hogan and in doing so, actually puts on a good match. Doink interference at the end makes me sad, because that feud was pretty much over anyways. Overall, a solid match, but the finish is ass.
Rating - **1/4
Bret Hart vs. Bam Bam Bigelow - Finals:
Hey guess what, Bam Bam's had about an hour or so to rest, and he's feeling pretty cocky. Bret, well, he just didn't get the rest Bam Bam got, and to add to it he's injured from his previous match. Bret has always played a great underdog, and I feel he really shined in this match. Bigelow also looked impressive here, but I wouldn't say he was 'carried' at all. Bigelow winning, and then the match getting restarted kinda detracted from how awesome Bret's victory was, but in my opinion, this was the second best match of the night.
Rating - ****
Overall Thought:
Outside of Bret's involvement, and the Tatanka/Luger match, this card boasts pretty much nothing memorable. As a matter of fact, I think this show is only known because of Bret's involvement, otherwise nobody'd care about it. Is it worth watching? Yes, but you're going to fast forward a hell of a lot.
