I gotta ask, when did the steel cage structure begin being brought down from the arena tops? I realised it seemed this way on April 2nd 2001 between Austin and Rock, and at WrestleMania II, but when did it start having those four cables hanging down at each corner?

Not sure when exactly they began lowering the cage from the ceiling, but I believe it was in the late 1990s. They brought out the cage piece by piece and assembled it by hand through at least the early 1990s. It was this way at WrestleMania II as well. On the live PPV broadcast (I taped it from PPV way back in 1986), after the Funks vs. JYD & Santana, they killed time before the main event by showing pre-recorded interviews with Hogan and Bundy, showing post-match interviews from the other cities (I want to say Roddy Piper was interviewed by Vince McMahon and Susan St. James), and they would occasionally show a live shot of the ring crew bringing out the cage sides, tying them together in the corners, etc.

It must have been from around 2000-2001, when WWE stopped using the classic style steel cage; also, if anyone knows this, was SVDM '99 the last time the black classic cage was used? I can't remember.

i believe svdm was the last time the old cage was used...it had to have been somewhere around late 1999/2000 when the newer style cage was used..

The last black frame style cage was used at UK PPV, Rebellion 1999.

Didn't Edge & Christian have a match in the black frame style cage at Rebellion 2001. Yep and it was later retired. In fact, wrestlers hated the barred cage. I recall the barred cage was lowered down at Breakdown: In Your House. As for the chain link cage, the WWF began using it again in 1998. The October 1998 MSG house show used the chain link cage.

Don't they still use the barred cage at house shows when they have cage matches?

Don't they still use the barred cage at house shows when they have cage matches? The barred cage has been retired. The WWE exclusively uses the chain link cage.

I was watching the February 1996 In Your House event on tape the other day, and damn, did Piper and Cornette stall like a mother er when they were constructing the cage piece-by-piece for the main event. It works so much easier when the first match of the night is a Steel Cage (i.e. Summerslam 1997), but often does that happen? Not very often at all, I would guess. That seemed like one of the biggest problems was how long it took to put together the old cage, what with it taking three men to carry each piece down the entrance and to ringside. And, looking back now, that cage didn't nearly fit the "15-Foot-High" moniker that was used when describing it. In that particular IYH main event, featuring Diesel vs. Bret Hart, Diesel's head wasn't too far away from the top of the cage, making it look a lot smaller. It also looked way too cartoonish, but nevertheless, I still enjoyed it while WWF/E was using it.
