I was reading the Lance Storm commentaries on promoters and ran across the Jim Cornette one which I missed. Here is an excerpt that I thought really should speak to TNA.
As a promoter he was also very good to work for. I always felt he was being honest with me and no one cares more about the wrestling business than Jim Cornette. He can at times be a bit of a rage-aholic, but that stems from his passion and love for this business, and most JC outbursts are more entertaining than harmful. I learned a lot working for Jim Cornette, the biggest of which being to cater to the individual crowd in front of you each night. Not every crowd is the same and regardless of the style you most like to perform it is wiser to perform the style the crowd most prefers to watch.
Now there is a lesson I believe that TNA should adhere to. They are not and should not be going after the WWE crowd. They should focus on the TNA and smart crowd and via that will get plenty of word of mouth as having a good smart free TNA would and could be as great as any great indy promotion out there right now.

Let's face it, the idea in TNA is very similar to WWE. They feel that by being more entertaining they can bring in people who don't want to watch their product. Every episode of Impact is essentially made to attract people to the product and buy the PPV.
The difference is though that TNA PPVs bring professional wrestling content. Sure we can all say that the stories and angles make no sense but if it was down to the core wrestling, it's still by far better than the WWE's current state.
Now here's the shocker, Jeff Jarret and company aren't interested in running a professional wrestling company, they're interested in rivaling WWE in sports entertainment. Jim Cornette's a genius professional wrestling promoter and that's not what TNA's looking for, unfortunately it is what they need.

I hear ya man. They just really want everything to outde WWE, but they lack the understanding that they will never be able to do that.

Jim Cornette doesn't want any pull, he doesn't even want to work with TNA anymore. He's fulfilling his contract and then will likely be done.

The problem with TNA going after WWE's audience is that WWE's audience doesn't want/need an alternative... they aren't the type of wrestling fans that go out of their way to find more wrestling. They'll watch an episode of RAW or Smackdown, enjoy it, and move onto something else without giving it a second thought. A typical WWE fan would look at TNA's pint-sized Impact Zone and crowd and be immediately turned off simply because it's initials aren't W-W-E. Until TNA starts to target young adults and the smark community, I don't see TNA getting any bigger than it already is.

I believe that TNA has been told about this for a long time. Even in PWI it stated that they should go after the smart fans and just give them stuff they want. Like the Fallen Angel and Samoa Joe DVDs.
