Well, I had planned on doing these every week, but time did not permit and honestly there's not always a talked about star every week. It seems it's not that common to have one guy steal the headlines and get all the attention. So, when it happens I'll try to review the guy who's getting all the buzz. This week it's none other than everyone's favorite announcer - Jim "JR" Ross.
Why the buzz? - Got drafted to Smackdown from Raw. Was not happy about it and vented on his blog (reportedly not a kayfabe vent) and had words with Vince about it afterward. Claimed he contemplated retirement rather than go to SD.
Titles - None to date. But has had his ass kicked by some of the best heel champions in the business.
Gimmick - He's an announcer and a face character. Beyond that he has no real gimmick other than being thoroughly disgusted with any heel tactic.
Ringwork - Very poor but then that's why he's an announcer.
Mic work - JR has been known as the voice of Raw since the early 90's and has done play by play work since the early 80's. He became head play by play man around '97 when Vince became Mr McMahon after the infamous Montreal Screwjob. He is, in my opinion, the best play by play guy in the business today and arguably of all time. He knows how to react to what goes on in the ring in such a way that it makes the viewer want to react in a similar fashion. A very, very talented announcer who plays well off of virtually anyone who sits at the announce table with him whether it be Savage, Heyman, Lawler or anyone else.
Charisma - Not the most charismatic guy on the roster, but neither is he bland either. As an announcer he's more interested in projecting an aura of credibility than one of entertainment and he does well at this.
Areas of excellence - Gets the crap kicked out of him every time he goes to Oklahoma City. Is very good at reacting to what goes on in the ring and putting over the action.
Backstage - Ross is a vet and a locker room leader. He is a former VP of talent and was responsible for scouting, signing and recruiting some of the Attitude era's biggest stars as well as some of the young stars of today. He is reportedly one of the few people in the WWE who can speak their mind openly to Vince McMahon without fear of retribution. He is respected backstage but doesn't seem to be too involved in backstage politicking.
