I'm pretty sure they were 3 hours, or at least close to it. I have a couple of old WWF PPV's from the original broadcast from 1990, which is SummerSlam and Survivor Series 1990, and both of them run about 2 Hours and 40 Minutes to 2 Hours and 50 minutes, and that's without the countdown show before them.
I know the old In Your Houses from May 1995-July 1997 were only two hours though, the first In Your House PPV to go three hours was Ground Zero 1997 in September.

I know the original WrestleMania was around 2 hours.
Then they changed it to about 2 hours and 45 minutes.

In Your House PPV's were shorter, like 2 hours or 90 minutes I think, they were cheaper too. The big 4 PPV's were about todays length.

The WWF PPVs in the 80's used to have a 5 minute intermission in the middle of the PPV where they just showed a blue screen with a countdown until it came back on.

Didn't WCW do a couple of 5hour PPV's? To my knowledge, they didn't do any five hour Pay-Per-View's, although, I guess you could kind of call Hog Wild 1996 5 Hours, because two hours before the actual PPV started they did a two hour live Saturday Night live, and then did the 3 Hour PPV to follow...

Ya the Free For All before WWF PPVs like In Your House were often full of matches that could be considered part of the show. I remember one Free For All match was Steve Austin vs Yokozuna which is a pretty cool combo you never saw anywhere else.
