The Ultimate Fighting Championship announced on Wednesday that undefeated light heavyweight standout Lyoto Machida will face another unbeaten competitor on Oct. 18 in Birmingham, England as he faces fellow Brazilian Thiago Silva.
Since coming to the UFC last year, Machida has kept his flawless record intact, while defeating fighters such as Tito Ortiz and Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou along the way.
Training with UFC champions Anderson Silva and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, the Brazilian has become a feared prospect at 205 pounds with his elusive style and pinpoint accuracy when striking.
His opponent, Thiago Silva, has gained a similar reputation since coming to the UFC, but his style has been seen as anything but passive.
Silva, who has moved his camp to the United States with the American Top Team, is 4-0 inside the Octagon, most recently stopping Antonio Mendes in the first round of their match-up in May.
Machida vs. Silva will be a featured bout on the UFC 89 card, which is filling up quickly. The promotion just announced three more fights for the card on Tuesday, featuring a main event between England’s own Michael Bisping against Chris Leben, and a proposed welterweight match-up between Thiago Alves and Diego Sanchez.

Hopefully the UFC come to their sense and stops advertising Leban/Bisping as the main event when this fight and the proposed fight have are a little more interesting. I hope this card is free as it was rumored to be if both of the fights mentioned are added.

I am really looking forward to this fight. Thiago Silva has been impressive in all of his fights, and Machida is a freaking machine.
This should be real interesting.
As for the rumored Diego/Alves fight...if it happens, I can see the winner getting whoever comes out of the whole Fitch/GSP/Penn situation.

Should be an interesting fight. Especially since they're both 13-0. This should be the Main Event in my opinion. Im rooting for Machida.

I think it'll be a great fight from start to finish. I'm going with Thiago for the win.

Man, this one deserves ME status IMO.
This is an interesting, interesting fight. Both fighters are pretty much at the tip top of their game, both have so much to bring to this fight. I have a feeling that this one may end up being all over the place.
I'm thinking Machida will win this one. No one's been able to figure out his unique style yet. Even though Machida is like a lightning rod of controversy due to the "stop running away/real fans appreciate his technique" arguments, I think Machida's got his sights set on the LHW belt and it'll take something massive to get Thiago the win.

And yet I really don't see UFC allowing Lyoto to compete for the Light heavyweight belt anytime soon.

I can understand promoting this as the USA main event, simillar to how Pride FC would promote fights as the main events differently in US & Japan. However Bisping is a huge star over here in the UK so makes sense to build hois fight with Leben as the main event to the UK fans.
As for Machida/ Thiago, it is a quality fight. Both guys undefeated & will be interesting to see how Thiago can cut the cage off & force Machida to engage him. I'm still picking Lyoto though, I think he is a step above the slugger Thiago

Man, this one deserves ME status IMO. Maybe if the card was free... Quite frankly, I can't imagine many people who would purchase a PPV Lyoto Machida in the main event. And yet I really don't see UFC allowing Lyoto to compete for the Light heavyweight belt anytime soon. I hope not.

Personally, I'd buy Lyoto/Silva on PPV if the undercard was good.
But, once again, this seems to be stirring up all that Machida controversy over whether or not he runs away from fights or if his technique is just that damn good.
So, I'll be mum on my feelings that I'd like a PPV ME featuring Machida. I'll just say that, ME or not, I really am quite looking forward to Machida/Silva.
