pwchronicle.blogspot.com/2005/12/history-tom-magee-golden-boy-of-1986.htmlSorry if this has been posted... I found this article pretty intriguing. It's interesting how this guy was supposed to be the next Hogan... even more interesting that Vince expected Hogan's successors to reach the same level as Hogan... I always figured they knew Hogan was the biggest thing that would happen to them in that time frame... putting myself in his position at that time when sports entertainment was young I can see how they could've expected another Hogan level star to emerge.

Very interesting read, thanks for posting.
I could see why Vince and others would be so high on the guy simply based on his appearance and bodybuilding career.
However, I think this is also a testament to how talented Bret Hart really was, even as early as 1986 during his years with the WWF. He made a lot of guys look greater than they really were in the ring, and Tom Magee wasn't the only "next Hulk Hogan" that Bret got to work with.
Remember Lex Luger and the Lex Express? Pretty much the same thing, and that never worked out either, mostly due to the fact that fans didn't care enough about Luger to want to see him as champion, and he was an average worker as well.

I think the point of this story is, Bret Hart can make anyone look good.

I actually saw one of those Tom Magee vs. Terry Gibbs house show matches live. Magee was even featured in the WWF Program in the "Keep Your Eye On..." section toward the back, where they tell you who to watch for (usually people in line for title shots or newcomers they planned to push).
He was very... vanilla. He didn't do anything particularly well, nor did he stand out in terms of personality or look (despite his muscles... a lot of guys were jacked by then, so muscles weren't unique). He just seemed "there."

Danny Spivey was a better Golden boy... He would have never had Hogan status... but I do wish he had done more with his WWE run, as he was great.

Yeah but in the mid eighties it was all about size as the steriod era was in full swing. No way would he have been accepted as a champion or main eventer then, wasn't until after the steriod scandal a decade later when a lot of big guys disappeared or got a lot smaller that bret & HBK were given the ball. As for Magee he had that huge look that Vince has always loved so no surprise that they'd see him as a future topliner.

A master like Bret really can make anyone look good. Vince had a hjard-on for roidheads. Think Paul Orndorff, Hercules, Tony Atlas and Ultimate Warrior getting big pushes in the 80s. Bret and Shawn Michaels got over despite hostility to the smaller men, making it all the more impressive.

Now hold on a second fella. paul orndorff was a quality wrestler, hardly fair to lump him in there with talentless steriod freaks like Herc & the Warrior. Bret & HBK didn't get over despite a hostility. They broke into the main event after the steriod scandal & Vince went with smaller guys as he had no choice. Could hardly say that the company was free of steriod with all the bad press going on & have a guy like Sid with the strap. The skill of Bret & HBK was that they were able to stay over once the scandal had died down and the bigger guys started to return

Orndorff however was a great heel and good personality. I know the steroid scandal put over Shawn and Bret in a big way, but you'd be surprised at how indifferent Vince was to both despite putting on the finest matches of their WWF era. In wrestling ability Orndorff may have been marginally better than Herc and Warrior, but I concede he was leagues ahead in mic skills.

Go check out Paul Orndorff vs. Ted DiBiase from the old Mid South territory. If you're judging Orndorff by his WWF and/or WCW work, he either A) didn't have much to work with, opponent-wise or booking-wise, or B) had lost his spark permanently due to the nerve damage in his arm. Orndorff was a very credible wrestler in his prime, before injuries and "sports entertainment" caught up with him.
