Following his UFC Fight Night 14 bout against Anderson Silva on July 19, James Irvin tested positive for banned substances, the Nevada State Athletic Commission confirmed to MMAWeekly today.
Following the loss to Silva, Irvin submitted to a urinalysis, and the urinalysis reflected the presence of Methadone and Oxymorphone.
Oxymorphone is a pain reliever prescribed to alleviate moderate to severe pain. Methadone is most commonly prescribed to recovering heroin addicts or for the management of chronic pain.
None of the fighters who competed on the July 19 card were subject to the NSAC's out-of-competition drug testing policy, which could have been due to the event being put together on relatively short notice.
Eleven of the 22 fighters who competed on the card were tested at the event. Anderson Silva, James Irvin, Hermes Franca, Cain Velasquez, Brandon Vera, CB Dollaway, Tim Credeur, Frankie Edgar, Shannon Gugerty, and Nate Loughran were all tested for steroids, drugs of abuse, and stimulants. Irvin is the only competitor who tested positive for a banned substance.
Irvin has 20 days to formally respond to the NSAC. Previous cases of fighters testing positive for drugs of abuse in Nevada have typically resulted in suspensions of eight or nine months.

Ouch...not only does Anderson Silva hand you your ass on national TV, the NSAC will likely hand you your ass with fines and a suspension.
Not a good time to be James Irvin.

I have to wonder if the short notice for this event played a role in Irvin testing positive.
It's been said that drug testing in MMA is more of an IQ test, because if you know when your fight is, you know when you have to get "clean" by, and therefore just need to do the math on how long various things stay in your system. That seems to make sense for performance enhancers, but I'm not sure if the same logic would apply to painkillers. I'm not a doctor, so if I'm way off, I apologize.

The logic makes sense, but we don't know when he was first notified about the idea of fighting, & we don't know how long it takes to get those drugs out of you're body

That sounds about right actually. if this is the case then the UFC shouold announce regular testing for guys who are under a contract with the UFC whether they are scheduled to fight or not. That would drive drugs out of the equation & then the winner would be the better fighter on the night. As wrestling fans we have seen the damage that drugs can do to people years later & I'd hate to then see this happening to the current crop of fighters in next 15 years.

Sucks for Irvin. But I don't like the guy anyways so it won't be any big loss to me. After all the sh** talking he did on Anderson Silva saying he was going to be the better muay thai fighter and blah blah blah he is just far to cocky of a fighter considering he isn't even that well rounded of a fighter. He still has a long way to go.
