I've only ever seen one bus stop that DID check bags and luggage, it was in Memphis a few years ago when I was going up to Pittsburgh. They had Military Police all over the place randomly searching people... I have no idea why either. Coulda been a one off thing, but it would be pretty wise for them to employ some sort of system. Unfortunately, they rush people on the bus to keep schedules (or make up lost time). I swear, it should be required to have your stuff at the very least x-rayed while you stand around and do absolutely nothing. Honestly, I'd be against bringing in airport-style security for buses. Besides, with so many bus-stops around the place, you could never check everyone anyway. Plus the cost of such stuff would drive up the price of a bus ticket. This was a real freak accident. The guy was obviously out of his head, or just snapped. Its not like this thing happens so often that i'd feel any need for real security on buses, except possibly allowing bus drivers to carry a gun or something (if they don't already, im not in the US/Canada so i dont know for sure). Im sure with the security for buses it would be for long bus trips not just random ones that your on for 15minutes or so.
