Christian Cage's TNA contract is up very soon. Cage was burned out on the schedule and hurting when he left WWE a few years ago, plus it was pretty much a lock he would be given the NWA title at the time he came. That was a lure for a guy who wanted to be a headliner and as things stood at the time, that chance wasn’t coming in WWE, where he left as almost a glorified television job guy. Plus, the head of the booking team at the time was Scott D’Amore, who he had been friends with since they all broken in the business together on the Canadian indie scene. D’Amore recently left the company. Cage never plays his hand publicly because he learned about avoiding booking team heat from years in WWE. But behind the scenes, like almost everyone, he’s been critical of the booking in TNA.
With three WWE brands and after a few years away, he may be like Chris Jericho, where he’s mentally ready for the schedule again. He turns 35 in a few months and that’s the age where you start thinking about taking advantage of the best money you can because you recognize the career won’t likely last forever. One of the keys for him taking TNA was to give him time to try acting, but after doing one movie, we haven’t heard of him doing anything in that direction, so that motivation for leaving WWE may no longer be there. It’s doubtful with Kurt Angle and Jeff Jarrett, that he would be either top face or top heel any time soon, but is guaranteed a nice money gig with an easier schedule and a good position.
WWE would be more money, more work, more organized, but he could easily fall to the back burner like he was when he left. Christian has had the chance to leave before and signed a second deal, indicating his first year in TNA in his mind was happier than his last in WWE. But within TNA, right now he’s considered the most serious potential departure because of the feeling that there is an angle tailor-made for him in WWE, and if he’s offered it, there is little chance they can keep him. WWE has expressed interest in him, even though he pissed a lot of people off when he left and how he left. He told everyone in WWE that he was burned out, suffering nagging injuries and wanted to take time off. He told everyone in WWE that he wasn’t going to TNA even though he had already made the deal,. They may forgive him for business reasons if they want him. His argument can be showing up in TNA was supposed to be a surprise and he promised to keep it quiet, but the top brass in WWE don’t always appreciate people who leave in that they consider a deceptive way.
A key to the equation would be if he could be brought reunited with Edge on Smackdown. That’s a guaranteed top position, and he’d almost surely thrive if given that opportunity because Smackdown is weak on the heel side and Christian is one of the best promo guys in the business. As far as being the back-up guy for Edge, he would almost guaranteed to be able to hang in that position, since Chavo Guerrero had basically that spot for the past several months. And with the recent angles on Smackdown, that spot is wide open.
Kong, like most of the women on the roster, signed a one-year contract about ten months back. Kong (Kia Stevens) had spoken up at meetings in the past about how happy she was in TNA and how happy she was she didn’t pursue going to WWE. However, WWE now has her best opponent. WWE’s idea of women’s wrestling was different and Kong, because of her look, was not even a consideration for many years. However, having gotten over in the U.S., that evaluation of her would likely be different today.
