MMAMANIA
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) recently inked light heavyweight Houston Alexander to a new five-fight contract extension, locking-in the services of the hard-hitting Nebraskan slugger well into 2009 if the promotion decides to keep him on the roster, according to WrestlingObserver.com.
Alexander was relatively unknown to the masses until he burst onto the scene with two destructive performances inside the Octagon, taking out top contender Keith Jardine in his debut back at UFC 71: “Liddell vs. Jackson” in May 2007 and then crumbling Alessio Sakara at UFC 75: “Champion vs. Champion” less than four months later.
“The Nebraskan Assassin,” however, quickly returned to Earth with back-to-back losses to Thiago Silva and James Irvin. In fact, Alexander didn’t last more than four minutes combined in those two bouts.
Despite his recent struggles, Alexander remains a fan favorite and a crowd pleaser win or lose. That’s more than likely the reason the promotion made the decision to keep him around.
He will have his opportunity to get back on the winning track against Brazilian jiu-jitsu specialist Eric Schafer at UFC Fight Night 15 in front of a hometown crowd at the Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha. Neb., on September 17.
=======
I'm looking forward to seeing Houston have more fights. The guy has freakish strength and he's loads of entertainment. I expect him to beat Schafer via TKO come Sept 17th.

The guy is like a modern day Tank Abbott with more skill. Very explosive, hits hard but get him on the ground and he is in trouble. If he gets a ground game he can be very dangerous. Looks a bit small on 205, may want to consider going down to 185.

He's lost his last 3 fights in a row. Thiago, Irvin and now Eric Shafer, in his own hometown no less. I have no idea who you put Alexander with now, but he's basically at the bottom of the heap as far as I'm concerned.
I mean, Cro-Cop lost two fights in a row to Gonzaga and then Kongo and then he was out of the UFC. Alexander loses three in a row and they re-sign him....I don't think that makes much sense at all...Keep Houston and get rid of Cro-Cop...Cro-Cop is a MUCH better fighter than Houston, that's for sure.

I agree Cro Cop should still be in UFC. Much better than the likes of Houston Alexander. Sometimes I think Dana gets the Vince syndrome. Pride = WCW/ WWe = UFC/ Dana = Vince

I really don't see how much more they can keep trying to push the whole "he's a fan favorite/crowd pleaser win or lose" theory if he's continuously losing in under 5 minutes. I got a kick out of his 2 KO wins as well, but he can't ride that thunder forever.
Unless he gets his act together and gets a ground game, he'll only stand a chance in stand-up battles.

You are correct sir. Houston needs a ground game bad, because I predict that every single one of those five fights will feature at least one attempt to get him on the ground. It's been proven that he's practically helpless once taken down, so not going for a takedown when facing him would be pretty moronic, and I don't see anybody trying to outpunch him when he's at such an obvious disadvantage when grounded.

I like Houston a lot, but he's just not well rounded. - Iron Heart Agreed. I say you give him the next 2 fights against guys who are best in the boxing department. It will just be a slug fest, which the crowd will love, & he'll have a stronger chance. It also gives him more time to work on his ground game, which is crap at best.

Silva would destroy Houston. I terll you the guy needs two things.
1. Some sort of ground game. Not saying he needs to become a submission specialist but damn something has to change.
2. Drop down to 185. While I do not see him beating Anderson Silva, he at least has a better chance at winning some fights there than staying at the stacked 205 division.

He's way too big to be able to drop to 185. I could see him going to heavyweight, but definately not middleweight.

I remember reading that during his first 2 fights in the UFC he walked around at around 205-210 while training for the fights. Also didn't he weigh in at like 203 for his first couple UFC fights? If thats the truth, then making 185 should be easy for him. ...then again after loosing 3 straight all in the first round, I dont think he should even be in the UFC in the first place. Go to another league and start working your way up again.

I think he should go to EliteXC. I was a big fan of Houston but the guy has to go. He is a great striker but his ground game is horrible.

^^^ I would actually be interested in that fight. I mean you know neither guy will try and take it to the ground as their ground game is just horrible with the slight edge going to Kimbo. There are just more options at EliteXC for Houston..he is somewhat of a name and could bring some much needed attention to EliteXC.

his groundwork doesn't exist, but if he was to work on that he could be a pretty dominating force. obviously it's a bit harder for a bigger guy, though
