A few questions;
how well do you think Dan Severn would fare in the current UFC Heavyweight Division?
How did you rate him in his prime?
Do you think he will ever return?
Personally the later years of his career have consisted of defeating relatively un-heard of fighters, it would be nice to see if the Beast still has a small last run in him.

Damn I just read a recent interview of his a couple days ago, I wonder if I can still find it...
He says he'd fight if the right fight came his way, but he wouldnt go against a young up and comer since it wouldn't do anything for him. He also goes on to say that in his prime he would be able to give Fedor a run for his money...heh...

Dan Severn is one of the Toughest Som' Bitches EVER to step into the cage. I think Dan could handle himself well in the current UFC heavyweight division, but I don't think he could handle Affliction's HW division. Especially Fedor, Barnett, and Arlovski.

I actually think he would die too. I just agreed on the fact tha Afflictions HW division would murder him more then UFC.

-- Speaking as a student of his, you have to remember that Severn is the 2nd oldest fighter on the circut right now... I was at his camp when he fought the oldest fighter (in his 60s) and it ended in the first round. And the 2 times I'd seen him fight LIVE, it ended in the first round ... ALL of which via "gooseneck choke" as he called it lol.
But these opponents wern't the calibur of fighters in the big time, I think given several years ago, he could've easily taken back the Heavyweight crown in the UFC, when Silva had it.
Against Andre or Fedor, it's tough to think he could overcome those 2, but in a fight against Barnett, it would be a classic catch-style fight and be very close...
He maybe in his 50s now, and not the quickest, but let me tell you, once he catches you, he knows how to utilize hipkido(sp?) tactics with weight distribution, and once you're locked in a Severn choke, you HAVE to Tap!

Severn/Barnett would end in Severn's death in the first round.

I think a few people are getting carried away here. The truth is that Dan deserves a lot of respect for still fighting well past his prime just because of his love of this sport. A guy who has over 100 fights with a win record of 86.15.7 is freaking insane.
HOWEVER Dan did recently lose here in the UK to Dave legeno, hardly a world level fighter. To say he could hang in the UFC nowadays is insane. He would get creamed, however in his prime he could make a fight of it with anyone especially with the old school UFC rules. The sport however has moved on greatly & just as Royce discovered against Matt Hughes & Kenny was taught by Ortiz previous accomplishments don't mean much against a younger, fitter more complete fighter.
This is not to be disrespectful to Dan, in his day I loved watching him fight but there is a reason he fights on the smaller shows nowadays because he simply can't hang with the top boys. To those suggesting he could make a fight of it with Barnett or cut through most of the UFC current division please wake up. However as I've said before I'd love a legends division & rematch with Coleman or fight with Frye. Just keep him the F*** away from Kimo, if you've seen the fight you'll know why!!

Dan severns about 55 I think, the dude fights alot of cans , but he has had over 100 fights, which is respectable, I would say his last decent win was against Justin Eilers about 5 years ago, I dont think Severn is fighting to become Champion or anything anymore, he just fights because he loves fighting, there is no way possible he can hang with guys like Nog, Werdum, Lesnar, Carwin, Valasquez, the man is wayyy out of his prime, every top fighter hes fought he has lost too

Dan is 54, he entered the Octagon around the age of 38 or 39. He dominated at the same age that Randy Couture dominated. He is also one of the most decorated amateur wrestlers in the world. I believe he is a Master of Sport in Sambo, or greater ranking, and a black belt in Judo. He has many years of experience behind him and as my old wrestling coach used to say about himself, Dan has probably forgotten more moves than most guys even know. Dan is truly a beast and has a heart of a champion. To keep doing what he's doing after all these years says a lot about him and his love of the sport.
As for hanging with todays top fighters, the only draw back that I see is his age, and how good of shape he's in. The last pic I saw of him, no idea from what year he had gained a lot of weight compared to his last UFC fights. That weight and whatever level of conditioning he is at right now would greatly affect how he handles anybody in todays market. Dan has never been a strong striker, and that may also inhibit him in todays game. I would love to see him step back into the octagon and go against a top name. Win or Lose, I'd watch him fight in the UFC again(I know he still currently fights in his own or other small promotions, but has not fought a big name in years).

I don't think it's totally fair to put an MMA pioneer up against a modern guy for a "who would win" comparison, because they were essentially different sports back then. Some of the skills today's guys have, a fighter like Severn never even trained for because he didn't need it.
That said, yes, I think Severn would have trouble in today's UFC... to put it mildly. But I also think Severn is sometimes trivialized and not given his just due because he's faded somewhat from the spotlight and isn't spoken about as much as other early fighters are.
