The planned main events for WM8 were Hogan vs Flair, Savage vs Roberts, and Taker vs Sid. However, Hogan decided he was going to "retire" to pursue movies after Mania, so Vince didnt want to give the belt to Hogan knowing he was leaving, and also didnt want a heel to leave Mania as champion. So the card was rearranged, Sid turned heel to face Hogan in his "last match," Taker turned face to fight Roberts, and Savage got the title match against Flair.
There is also word that Hogan and Flair werent drawing well on the house show circuit either, so plans for Mania were changed.

Exactly that. Though I will say that Hogan was also probably not wanting to job to Flair just like he did in WCW.

Im pretty sure its actuall that when Sid signed his WWF contract he did it on basis that he main event WM with Hogan (Notice Justice was put straight into a storyline that dealt with Hogan) Of course at that time Flair wasnt in the WWF. So contractually McMahon had to put Hogan vs Sid as a WM matching leaving Flair to the side only to be placed in a match with Savage. Sid, Pat Patterson and Flair have all said the same thing

alot of rumors, wow! first untrue rumor is Hogan and Flair not drawing well. No way that's true becuse after Hogan left ratings went down during Flairs, Randy Savage and Brett Harts reigns. That's why Vince let Hogan get the belt during that terrible ending to the Yoko vs Brett match at WM. I highly doubt Syd was able to demand a main event spot at WM 8. The guy wasn't anybody at the time he first came into the wwe so that's just impossible that he could corner Vince with such an outlandish request.
The reason I have read and heard is that Vince was unhappy with Hogan due to leaving so much to do movies and his talk of retirement. Also Ric was originally going to beat Macho(thats one reason they wern't the last match) but weeks before the match Randy bitched to Vince continually about losing again at WM so Vince switched it. (taken from Ric Flairs book)

that a fair point.if that would have happened Savage would have lost at WM3,5,6,7 and 8.a big deal in the 4 PPV a year era I suppose.

Why wouldn't Sid have turned heel? Though a Sid (face) vs. Undertaker (heel) match would have been very interesting.
