The fact that the DDT was ever a finisher is a joke. I totally diagree on that. The way Jake excuted it was like no other. Once he drilled someone with the D.D.T., it was over. I don't see anyone these days that executes a D.D.T. quite like Jake did. If you ask me, the D.D.T. is certainly a whole hell of a lot more effective than an ing F-U as a finisher. That's for damn sure. All the F-U is, is a fireman's carry into a bodyslam pretty much, more or less. Tell me how that's more effective than ramming someone's head into the ground?? Whatever. Doesn't matter. It's just stupid what it takes to beat someone these days. WAY too un-realistic and unbelievable. Too over-the-top for my liking. Jake Roberts was extremely good at the DDT and the best at the time. But there are several wrestlers who do it better now.

Look at any multiman indy match and somewhere in there you see a move similar to the doomsday and yet it never finishes the match unless your name ends in Briscoe

But the Briscoes are double tough dammit... I'm just saying that back in the day, a DDT was seen as a finishing move because that's how it was marketed. Just like how Chris Masters' Masterlock doesn't really seem realistically hard because most ppl just don't buy it. But back in the day, an full nelson was a finishing move. It's just natural evolution of wrestling holds. Hell I still don't see how back in the day a "huge body slam" was a finishing move but it was.

This is less a commentary on the evolution of wrestling and more of a 'Mr Old School' Cena bitchfest.

In ten years, the Burning Hammer will be used as a setup move.

This is less a commentary on the evolution of wrestling and more of the usual Mr Old School Cena bitchfest. I have never seen Mr. Old School bitch about Cena, but about today's wrestling in general with the argument that in the 80's, early 90's it was better. That is his opinion, and I do agree with the finishers thing. I mean, in a normal match, a finishers ends the match, but in a specialty match it seems like they somehow get superhuman abilities and are able to resist even more, which isn't really that good.

I edited my post in case I'm misremembering, but I'm pretty confident that Mr. Old School is quite open about his dislike of Cena. He has pulled back on actively expressing it, but is Cena through a light really the only example he can think of the cite for his topic of superhuman wrestlers? It's a very valid point that finishing moves of yesteryear are typical moveset filler of today; but it's not like guys are thrown into giant lights every match nowadays. He took a DDT as an example, and compared it to a finish in a Last Man Standing match. Not quite a fair comparison...you expect them to go big to put these guys away in a match like that now.

i agree with you in terms of the fact that they take waay too much damage per match, which has made fans really on bigger and bigger bumps. it's stupid.

Honestly- it's because wrestling has grown as an entertainment industry rather than solely a (mock) athletic event. People don't want realism and believability- just look at all our movies compared to those of old...the format just changes and gets more ridiculous as we get more and more de-sensitized to it. Also- yeah, John Cena is NOT human...the WWE needs to keep reaffirming this with their youthful viewers. Oh, and HHH is obviously a Golden God. I completely disagree with you (with what is bold above). I think people do want those things which is why I think MMA, UFC, etc are seeing such an increase in popularity. Honestly, I think wresting fans (new and old a like) are tired of seeing garbage and having their intelligence insulted week after week. In the dying days of WCW marketers went out and tried to find out my fans were turning away or have stopped watching wrestling and you know how they responded? They wanted more athletic and authentic style matches. Mr Old School, I agree with everything you have said and probably will say about this topic. In my mind you are hitting the nail right on the head!

This is one of the statements I agree with more than any I have ever read on these forums. The DDT could still be a finisher if it was done right. Think about it, it is driving someone's head into the ground. Lights out. I remember from the Jake DVD, he said "People today, they miss the hold. They think it's a hop and fall thing". That was 2005 and it has only gotten worse since then. The Edgeacution is one of the worst DDT variations I have ever seen. Cody's looks pretty bad as well. The worst I think I have ever seen was Lita's. The epitome of the jump DDT. I also agree with the original post as well. A legdrop is a pretty good finish if you ask me. Jumping and landing on someone's head ass first sounds like a concussion to me. On the other hand, the aforementioned Edgecution (as much as I love Edge) is pretty much a full body flapjack. The FU...sorry, attitude adjustment is a fireman's carry...weak. The GTS is one of my least favorite. Talk about wasted motion. Nobody would ever get nailed with that. Why would you throw someone on your shoulders and then drop them on your knee. I have always said Regal's knee trembler is way better, quick, deadly, like the DDT. That is what a finisher should be. It is a spectacle, as it always has been, but now it's a bit too much. Top rope FU's, brutal chairshots, going through tables, onto the concrete. Many of those should have been 10 counts. It's only a matter of time before people kick out of Orton's punt.

And I'm not saying this to be a smart ass - but really, if ANYONE has a problem with how wrestling has evolved, or doesn't like the product... turn off your TV. Wrestling is NEVER going to be what it was - and unless you're a writer, you aren't going to always get to see, what you want to see. If you can't accept it, don't watch the program. Pick up a new hobby, stop watching for a while, and maybe tune in again after a few months. All in all, I think a LOT of people pick out what they don't like, way to often... instead of remembering what they love about it, and why they're a fan.

You were right about the part where Cena comes out like nothing happened. They could have atleast put some bandages on him or something to sell explosion.
Its ridiculous and it really exposes the wrestling business as fake.
