I was talking to a few friends in a debate about life, God and all that and it lead into a great debate over things. I always seem to have good debates with these people.
This girl asked me my thought on religion and, for me... I don't believe in God, but I don't like pushing my thoughts on anyone. However, this being a message board-
I honestly think that people think we're far to important, when in fact we're not important at all. People always argue "There has to be a reason why we are here"
Really? Why does there have to be a reason that were here? Even if there was a reason why we are here, why would it be an important reason at all?
Why do we think we're such important creatures?

i know what you mean. why does humanity have to have a great meaning or purpose. why can't we just be here? if this is what you are saying, i agree with you.

I thought of what Carl Sagan said and thought it was fitting.
" Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there – on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.
Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.
It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known."

I try and take care of my wife and daughter but the crap I have been through in my life is ridiculous. people on here wouldnt even beleive the crap that has happened to me. So I ask that all the time to my wife (who beleives in god) If he was real why would all this crap happen to me (or us).

I can't answer why bad things happen to good people though. All I can say in true confidence is that God gave everyone one free will. This enables us to pick and choose what we do with our lives and the decisions we make. Never were the words uttered by Jesus or God that bad things wouldn't happen. Think about it, bad things have been happening since the beginning of existance as far as the Bible is concerned. I'm not preaching, just giving my thoughts on the matter. I do appreciate the fact that you haven't come in here and belittle, disrespect, or **** on my beliefs though. It's a refreshing thing to see in a topic like this.

I guess I never looked at it like that. but I could understand if I do bad things, bad things should happen to me but I think I am a pretty good person and yet I have the worst luck in life.

What I don't understand, is that if you don't believe in god, (Boocaster) then how can you assume if he did exist that he would do good for us? And how can one "understand" god? Has anyone met him? I love how everyone talks about god and jesus like they're living in the apartment next door. Everyone says what god thinks, what he believes, what jesus would do. It doesn't make sense for everyone to have so much insight on something that has never been proven to exist.

I'm with Super Dragon on this one.
Bad things happen to good people waaaay too often than bad things happening to bad people; therefore, I do believe that there is a God, but I don't believe in God. (if that makes any sense)

I do believe that people feel we are too important. All we are is highly evolved animals. Mutants, on the other hand, they're special!

Its a weird thing when you do think about it,everyone in the world can be replaced and most of society has no real part in the world if you think about it but like i said they can be replaced. And to add to this whole debate about believing in god and all this, what makes our religion so special?,why do we look at others and say "oh its a load of crap and only god exists"in my opinion heaven is only a sate of mind that make people feel good about when they die they can go to a better place,i used to think that heaven wasn't real and once you were dead then well...you were dead but then i thought about not existing and how weird it would be and its just so weird to think that because it just doesn't make sense to me that when people are dead and they don't see anything,i believe in a second life or whatever you wanna call it but thats just my point of vies, does any of that make sense?

I'd really like to just address the part of this question that pertains to humanity, as religion is always something that fires people up, regardless of how they try to position themselves.
I'm not gonna lie, I'm not religious in any way, but that's not what this is about.
"Really? Why does there have to be a reason that were here? Even if there was a reason why we are here, why would it be an important reason at all? Why do we think we're such important creatures? "
As with the other psychological properties that man inherently possesses (part of the human condition) it seems to me that it's just part of our nature to question these kinds of things, as we have the ability to.
Just my two cents.

I get what you're saying. Individually we aren't really important to the grand scheme of things, whatever that may be. People die and come into the world daily and yet nothing seems to change.

Thinking about that kind of stuff makes me think about this vieo:
Now, you have to think that those are only a small, small, small, small, small part of the universe, so there has got to be other planets capable of sustaining life, right?
But we would never be able to travel there because it would be billions of light years away. To me, a light year is almost an incomprehensible unit of measurement.
You see where I'm going here? Thinking about the Universe, and god is full of mystery, paradoxes, and riddles.
