Good read. Accurate as well. I know Lorenzo denies that the Yankees have an advantage in this area, but it's a fact that they do. I don't blame them for using this advantage as every other team would do the exact same thing. I also don't think they beat the Phillies solely because they had a higher payroll.

If the Braves keep Laroche, keep Hudson, and try and get a 30+ homerun hitter, i think they have a strong chance at making the playoffs. I hope.

I dunno, I hate general managing like this but with Lee for a full season, and Hamels likely to have a better season, the Phillies are still the powerhouse in that division. If I were the Mets or Braves, I wouldn't go nuts trying to contend next season... The Braves were close enough where they don't have to make a gigantic splash... just add a few bit pieces. The Mets should go into their season just expecting that not 90% of their roster will get hurt... although I do think they need a big corner outfielder.
Just because they lost, I don't think the Phillies are going anywhere... they have that core in place, and I expect them to collect a few more NL East titles in the next few years.

I think the Braves spin Vasquez for an actual middle of the order hitter, and Heyward or someone actually steps up a bit...the Braves win that division, and wont be close.
Call Kenny Williams, get Bobby Jenks....deal Vasquez....get that bat...start Heyward in April
Division title in September.

Vazquez pitched very well last season, which you can use two ways... keep him and hope he does it again, or sell high on him assuming he is more of a high 3.00, low 4.00 ERA pitcher, as opposed to the ace he looked like last year.
Only problem with trading him is that he is a 32 year old pitcher with 142 career wins, who has always had an electric arm. You're gonna want a good return on him. However, his average years in New York, Arizona, and Chicago are gonna send warning signs to teams looking to acquire him.
I was actually disappointed the Yankees gave up on him so fast. Yes, you look at the stats, and he wasn't that great here... but he was healthy and gave innings, and thats always a plus.

^Giving up a grand slam in a deciding game of a playoff series is usually a ticket out of town for the Yankees

I believe the Yankees will bring back only one of Matsui and Damon. Likely it will be Damon, because if you want to give another guy a half-day off at DH and you want Damon in the line-up, he can still play the field, while Matsui can not. It is a shame because Matsui quietly produced year in and year out every year he was healthy. And if he is done in New York, it was good for him to get the recognition and championship he deserved. With moving Damon to the DH, I believe they will aim to improve the outfield defense. They have always love Mike Cameron, so I wouldn't be surprised if they went after him on a short-term one or two year deal. Melky-Cameron-Swisher left to right wouldn't be a bad defense in the outfield.
They also need one more starter. Lackey of course is the big name, and we'd have probably the best rotation on paper if we got him, I really don't see them going after him. If he is willing to take a 2-year deal, I could see them going after Rich Harden to fill that fourth spot. He has strike out stuff to survive in the hitter friendly park. That being said, I see some team offering Harden a third year and thats where he ends up.
I believe they'll shy away from long term contracts this offseason after last winter. Other than that, I really don't know what they'll end up doing. Should be interesting.

I'd take a flier on Harden... at this point, he is a huge risk. You know he'll pitch well, but you can't expect more than 18-20 starts from him. And honestly, if we have Burnett and/or Wang in that same rotation, thats 2-3 injury risks... yes, despite 2 consecutive healthy years, Burnett remains a risk.

I think Lorenzo works for the AJC now. Someone there was suggesting we move Tommy Hanson to the closer role.

No one ever complained about having too many front line starters. They're got the money to pay him more than any other team out there. Why not? If you've got CC/Lackey/Burnett/Pettitte, then you can put Wang in as #5 in a no pressure situation if he's healthy. If he's not, you can toss Joba in there. Heck, with that rotation you could have Gaudin as your 5th starter and still dominate a short series.

anyone watching the parade on MLB.com
couple of Yankee "fashion" notes...A-Rod is wearing a derby hat & aviators...Burnett has on a business trench coat...& The Yankee playoff hoodie. Cervelli must be feeling pretty good about himself being on a float with A-Rod & Jay-Z
