Now, the last ten years we haven't had any real good horror movies except for Scream & maybe I Know What You Did Last Summer. Those are the kind of horror movies I like, where there's a killer. Will there ever be another icon like Freddy Krueger, Jason or Michael Myers again? We do have good movies coming out soon, a Child's Play remake with rumored to star Jensen Ackles which could be good, depending on the director. Frankenstein remake, with amazing director Guillermo del Toro who will definitely stay true to the Frankenstein story as he was a big fan younger with Frankenstein books, etc. He is also directing a movie called "Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark" which you should check out the trailer, scariest trailer I've seen in my life. Of course Scream 4 is coming out next year, which will definitely do good.

I dunno. I liked Scream but it helped spawn tons of really awful teen slashers, I'm lumping I Know What You Did Last Summer in with that. Thought that was an awful movie, I even saw it in theaters haha.
Good horror is out there, to say that horror is dead is misinformed imo. This decade alone we were graced with Freddy Vs Jason, 3 new Romero Dead films, and a handful of other quality horror movies, things us horror fans were clamoring for in the 90's.
If you want good horror my advice is to dig into the indy stuff, tons of great stuff coming out "under the radar."

I was going to say Saw is pretty much the Freddy and Jason of this generation. Sure hes not a slasher but the name Jigsaw has become a household thing for horror. As far as good horror goes... its out there! You just have to take a trip off the mainstream path. Most good horror is either indie or foreign. Plenty of good horror titles such as.... The Collector, House Of The Devil, The Orphanage, Daybreakers, REC, Hatchet, Frozen, Devil's Rejects, The Descent, Behind The Mask, Wolf Creek, Midnight Meat Train, The Mist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, Let The Right One In Someone else should chime in some foreign horror films as I am drawing a blank for some reason I'd say for the best slasher/killer movies lately I would have to pick: Hatchet, Wolf Creek, The Collector.

I'm just tired of mainstream horror movies that look like "the ring". You know, movies that look way too slick and fake. We need more grindhouse/70's style horror movies. Zombie did a good job with the new Halloweens and Del Toro always has promise. And I still say "High Tension" was the best thriller/gore movie I've seen in the past 10 years. Like Edgeman said, there are plenty of good foreign horror films. Just have to look.

^ Exactly there, like what I mean is, we don't really have movies anymore that people will remember for the next decade. Like people still watch Scream, that movie was big when it came out. There hasn't really been a horror movie as big in the cinemas since then other than Freddy vs Jason and most recently Paranormal Activity. I know I will give some indie movies a try, thanks guys.

The best horror these days goes unnoticed by the general public. It's either very limited in theatrical release or straight to DVD.

I'm surprised at how popular SAW is, given how bad it really is. Story wise I think it's pretty smart. Acting wise it's god awful, one or two actors are good then the rest just make me want to turn the movie off. But like I said story wise they have a good thing going, I mean I do keep coming back.

I agree that Scream was much better than any horror movie that's come out since... and I'm really excited for Scream 4 as well.

I have to say I thought The Strangers was fairly creepy and unnerving.
the 70s/80s were huge decades for Horror and providing icons....doubt we will ever see the likes of it again to be honest.

The best horror these days goes unnoticed by the general public. It's either very limited in theatrical release or straight to DVD. Exactly. I mean, the biggest (and widely considered the greatest) horror films of all time were limited release or underground films. Think about it. Evil Dead, Dead Alive, Dawn of the Dead, Re-Animator, Cemetary Man, Halloween, Deep Red, the list goes on. Horror has never been, as a genre whole, extremely popular. A few films have become crossover mainstream hits (Paranormal Activity, Blair Witch, Scream) but they tend to be the films that had some sort of gimmick which got them to that box office number. Some great indie/foreign horror to check out: Thirst Martyrs Dead Snow Fido Black Devil Doll Pig Hunt F/X Frozen Audition Suicide Club Cold Prey Ginger Snaps Dog Soldiers The Host And those are just within the past few years, there are hundreds of movies to be recommended. A lot of them aren't readily available though, like 80% of Italian horror. I mean, this Christmas alone Rare Exports comes out, check out the original short on youtube, that's going to be awesome. There's also Slint, about a killer Santa, also coming in December.

This decade alone we were graced with Freddy Vs Jason, 3 new Romero Dead films, and a handful of other quality horror movies, things us horror fans were clamoring for in the 90's. the horror genre and films that a lot of us grew up with and fell in love with have completely went to the side in place of films like the Saw series and Hostel, but those are so devoid of any real creativity in the writing and development of the story and characters and rely soley on sadistic torture and buckets of gore to get a scare rather than really building us up and reaching for our hearts at the point when we can't take the suspense anymore. i know people are desensitized these days, but that's just too much for me, and it get's to the point where it's not even fun anymore. and Freddy vs Jason was decent, albeit it feeling a little rushed when it all came to a head. and i love Romero but his last 3 films are TERRIBLE. i also hate first person movies for the most part too, so that was my disgust with Diary. Plenty of good horror titles such as.... The Collector, House Of The Devil, The Orphanage, Daybreakers, REC, Hatchet, Frozen, Devil's Rejects, The Descent, Behind The Mask, Wolf Creek, Midnight Meat Train, The Mist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, Let The Right One In you forgot The Descent 2, i liked it as much if not more than the first.

Descent 2 was awful, therefore, I mostly ignored everything you said once I saw that. It's all opinion, but you act like torture porn has taken over horror. It hasn't. I just listed like 10 recent movies that aren't anything near Saw or Hostel.

[/quote] I'm not really trying to defend Saw or anything, but honestly I think horror has relied on violence and gore for a long time haha, I can name 30 movies that are much more sadistic than Hostel and they came out decades before that film. The main difference now is that the MPAA is more accepting of it and people are getting away with more and more, that wasn't happening in the 80's and 90's. Just watch some of the special features on the more recent Friday the 13th dvd's, the stuff they had to cut to maintain and R rating is tame by comparison. I think it's an awesome time to be a horror fan, you just need to know where to look. Don't let the fact that some of the more recent mainstream stuff blew overshadow all of the stuff being put out on blu-ray and dvd. I think some of you might not be old enough or have forgotten the days where it was ing impossible to get some of these (now) easily accessible movies, I remember being a kid and trying to buy a copy of the Evil Dead, it wasn't going to happen. This was before Anchorbay and their 300 releases. Evil Dead was no where. I had to rent it, and rent it I did, I probably rented that movie 30 times in 3 years. I remember paying 35 dollars for a VHS copy of Zombie. Now we've got the New York Ripper on blu-ray, Night of the Creeps at bestbuy.

Yeah, and a lot of those new Blu Rays are like $10-15 brand new (Trick R Treat, Frozen, etc) whereas a DVD from the original Grindhouse Releasing release of Cannibal Holocaust used to be $50 it was so hard to find. Now you can get it at Borders for $23.
Horror, and distribution in general, has changed over the years. As more options become available, more movies will get made, and people will continue to complain that there are no good movies anymore despite the 10,000 new titles coming out each year.

I just listed like 10 recent movies that aren't anything near Saw or Hostel. The Descent 2 was like The Descent on crack... what's not to love? hah. i was also talking more mainstream movies in the last 5-10 years as that is all the original poster seemed interested in. you listed all foreign and indie horror. the most commercially successful and popular horror movies over the last couple of years have been loaded with gore and torture for the shock value with the story being pushed to the backburner or completely not existant. i'm not saying that is all that's left either, but it's what has been successful, atleast here in the states, and i think alot of that goes back to society as a whole wanting instant gratification in our faced pace world in the year 2010. also, like mentioned above, horror movies have used grotesque sequences and gore for YEARS, but it has evolved now in that films rely on the gore first, rather than using it as an enhancer for the building suspense and story being told. i'm all for gore and buckets of blood in my movies, if it has significance to what i'm watching, but using it just to get me to show up and watch? no thank you.
