Ok I'll bite: Derek Jeter made 21 million dollars
He finished 8th out of all SS's in average, beyond such juggernauts as Marco Scuatro and Stephen Drew (2009 he was 2nd in AVG) He finished 12th in HR's, he finished 4th in 2009 He finished 6th in OBP with a decline of 66 points from his 2nd place finish in 2009 He finished 14th in Slugging, 2009 he was 4th....95 point drop He finished 10th in OPS with .710 and he finished 4th in 2009 with .871, that is a MASSIVE drop. His lowest ever by the way. His IsoP was .100 in 2009 it was .131
Not to mention hes a terrible fielder, do you wanna pay someone with MASSIVE declining numbers for 6 more years? Or even 4? Especially at 15+
He will be average in 2 years.

Rivera is still an elite closer and arguably the best in the game. If any of the guys is worth overpaying, it's him.

I give Jeter 3....4 at the very most but make him realize he's not a leadoff or 2 hole hitter anymore. His career at SS is very very short. Fully expect to be moved come 2012 to either the OF or 3B. If he doesnt like it, honestly I say let him walk. Nobody is going to pay Jeter that kinda money. You know he isnt the type of person to run off and sign with the Sox or Mets. Faces of teams leave all the time. FFS, the Yankees shipped Ruth off.

People make fun of the Red Sox for letting Damon, Pedro and all the "Stars who led us to the title" but it all worked out, being sentimental with a player is bad business. Jeter is different I agree, but giving him anymore than 2+ years is a bad bad bad bad move, especialyl when you are going to have to move him offa SS by the end of next year.
Free Agency starts Sunday!

He's not an elite SS. He's an average one at best, but he's still a productive player.

Comparing Babe Ruth 80 years ago and Jeter....child please for 20 million and 6 years, HE IS NOT WORTH IT

The Rockies have traded catcher Miguel Olivo to the Blue Jays, writes Troy Renck of The Denver Post. Colorado will receive cash considerations or a player to be named later, according to a press release from Toronto.

Again, you people think Derek Jeter is made of wet sand...so magically at 36 he's just going to fall apart and no longer be able to play baseball. How would moving him to the outfield HELP?? so if he's supposedly so slow, and aging...why would he be able to throw the ball FARTHER and be able to run longer distances? That logic makes absolutely zero sense. It amazes me how little people think of athletes...so Jeter has one mediocre year...now all of a sudden he's going downhill, is worthless, and only has 4 good years left in him. There is too much moving around in sports anyway, to have a guy start and finish his career with the same team is almost impossible, and it says that much more for a player when he can. If Jeter wants to be remembered in the top 5 all time Yankees he needs to stay no matter what. He's not going to turn into a .160/5/36 9th hole hitter for christ sake.

RIP Sparky. My parents are huge Tiger fans, they both have the logo tattooed on them.

He's playing a demanding position at an old age...

I don't think I've heard of anybody who does want to pay em for 6. My max is 4 but I agree the final years would be risky. PS I make fun of the Red Sox for all that Manny and Damon stuff but I really make fun of them for the Bronson Arroyo deal when he signed for less to stay and they traded him like a month later for Willy Mo Pena.

No one is saying that he's going to hit .150 next year. They're just saying that if you sign a 36 yr old guy for 6 years you're not going to get anything out of him for the last 2-3 yrs of that contract.

I dont think any Yankee fan WANTS Jeter to go anywhere but you have to realize that if we can get a higher production at the SS position and at leadoff/2 hole....you HAVE to go with it. Baseball, especially the Yankees is still a business. NY will do everything to accommodate Jeter to keep him as a member of the team but they cant cripple themselves and their future for just one guy. Jeter HAS to understand that he's not bigger then the team. Ruth was traded, Mantle had his positions switched...its all part of a baseball life

The braves just went through this with glavine and smoltz. They were blasted for letting them go, but they made the right decision to do so.

You might not get any production in the last year of that contract, but it's not a bad move. Letting him get his 3,000th hit with some other team would be bad PR wise.

No one is saying letting Jeter go, but if he digs in and says "I want 4 years", the Yankees wont have a choice.
Any other team, any other player.....hes moved off SS already and he gets 2 years and is thankful

Somebody in the Yankees org finally had the balls to tell Pose a Duh he shouldnt be catching? Or the Yankees finally have another option to be a full time starting catcher. Montero might not be ready defensively but his bat is extremely promising. Should be fun to watch his progression.
