If you haven't noticed the trend yet, most of the people who get picked on or are embarrassed are the teenagers and the people in their mid twenties and up don't care what people think.
When you are a teenager, in general your friends will pick on you and you will pick on them. It's called immaturity. Now, I'm not saying you are an immature poster or as an insult/negative, but in 10 years you will look back and laugh about everything you currently do/say/think. In the long run, even if that cashier does make fun of you, just smile and say "yea i'm still a kid at heart." or simply "yea, i collect them for fun." Some people genuinely don't know that people collect toys as a hobby so it strikes them as odd when a teenager buys toys. It's really not a big deal and it's not worth insulting someone's life situation. In the end, they have their opinion and you have yours regardless of who insults who the best. Most people will respond favorably with a kind response and you might gain a relationship or respect with the employee or employees at your local store, and in return, get better customer service and more employees willing to help you out.

I'll ask this again...how many of these "are you embarrassed to collect or go buy figures" threads are we going to have? This is a board on Mattel figures, not a peer counseling session. If there are those that are so concerned about what other people think...then yes, you are too old to collect.

If people say anything I just tell them I'm buying the figures for my son. Kim

You have to keep in mind that everyone goes in to TRU for the same reason, to buy toys. Don't be embarrassed.

Embarrassed most of the time. Absolutely. My store usually has crap. So I am embarrassed to give them my patronage.

If a cashier gives me lip, I just mention "I have a good paying job, I don't work for minimum wage behind a till like you". That shuts them up. I've said it like 3 times now. None has answered me back. If they did, I would just go to the manager and say how rude their staff is. In general though, don't be embarrassed about what you like, I'm 26 and I really couldn't give a crap what people think. It's not like you're going around doing something creepy or socially unnacceptable, you're collecting plastic representations of something you like watching on TV. I fail to see what's wrong with that. You should be the one telling yourself how rude your comment was. Just like the song theirs nothing wrong with a hard hat and a hammer, and theirs nothing wrong with being a cashier. Nothing wrong with having a minimum wage job either. I know people who have worked as janitors for schools their whole life, and they love it. You know just because something isn't as glorious or doesn't make as much money as a higher paying job, doesn't mean its a crappy job. Anyways, don't be embarrassed about what you like. It may be weird going through the checkout line with a bunch of toys, but who cares?? I've never had anyone saw something rude to me, but if they did I'd make it as weird and awkward as it could be. so you still play with these dolls? yeah I do, we do all kinds of freaky stuff

im 22 and i felt embarrassed at first. i didnt know how to get to my local TRU till like a year ago so the first time i went in i felt a little weird. but then i got to the WWE aisle and saw like a bunch of guys probably twice my age in the aisle. some with their kids but clearly trying to influence their kids as to which figures to buy. i kinda laughed not cuz i thought they were too old but because i thought to myself "here is a bunch of grown up guys in a toy aisle. none of us know each other. yet we all have the same hobby." it was pretty cool.

Been going to TRU since I was a kid 20+ years ago, use to go there at least once a week even when I was a teen, and in my early 20s. Heck back when I was 12, 13yo or so, and there was a local Toy Works around, I'd go there almost every single day, that place was so awesome, way better then TRU. And I have never once felt embarrassed.

I'm 23 and I've been collecting since I was a kid. I use to collect wrestling figures but now I get all the UFC figures and any Mattel Shawn Michaels or Legends that I like. I don't feel embarrassed one bit! I actually was at Target last week with my girlfriend and I had to ask the one of the lady Target employees to get the Defining Moments figures from the stockroom (I bought both HBK & Macho Man) and when she came back she asked if they were for me. I said yes and she said that was awesome. So I've never had a problem with employees being idiots.

Nah, I could care less. I have a girlfriend who accepts it, so if I walk in to a store with her, she actually offers to buy it sometimes. She loves me for who I am, so I don't care what others think.

I'm 28, and like many other older posters here, never feel that way, though admittedly my TRU never has anything for me to buy anyway. I bought most of Legends 1 at Target, and actually struck up a conversation with the cashier about Dusty Rhodes. That was the best, though sometimes the cashiers can give you certain looks...I pay them no attention.
