I dont know who is running things at Mattel concerning the Legends lines, but they do not seem to know what they are doing. they blame it on retail sales or marketing/distribution issues. But the fact is, they do not seem to have a knowledgable Fan from the legends era's that knows what sells and what is wanted out there.
Mattel is WAY Bigger than Jakks and should able to whip thier butt with this line! But are not, so far!
The figures they have made look great. LOVE they got Savage & Steamboat. Warrior is also a big one. Demolition, Perfect, Rude, Warriors, etc. And the detail and accessories is Great.
But who they are putting in lines and the outfits are not helping with sales. Like the outfits Slaughter & Snuka came in. Evil Jake, or The Choice for 1st series 2-packs (piper/orton?), or series 6 with not 1, but 3 sure to be shelf warming von erichs. 5-pack von erich online exclusive would be better, and Tornado is good in a decent 6-fig line.
Add this to the fact the economy sucks and figures are on average $5-$15 more than Jakks CS were 8 yrs ago. (includes DM, EG, Tag teams)
and we get shelves warming up, stores ordering less, and legends line dwindling down to probably one fig in each elite series soon.
And its do to bad figure choices to start line, and overpriced figs in basically the second depression.
They had Jakks history to see how to do it. Start the 1st lines off BIG, and keep prices low. (raise them a bit later when us fish are hooked, if need be).
1st singles line had to have some of these to get rocking, preferable 6 of these. and each line thereafter at least 2 of these in different outfits if need be (and then trickle out the second teir wrestlers that are needed along with them):
Hogan Andre Warrior Bret Shawn Flair Savage Undertaker Rock Austin Lesnar LOD Razor Ramon Diesel
and 1st series 2-packs should have been:
LOD - RED Bret vs Shawn (ss97) Austin vs Rock (WM)
and then you have to keep the lines coming, waiting 6 months for a new set is boring and makes you lose interest.
My top 10 most wanted
HERCULES (WM3 version) Hogan Studd (1989 version) Bundy Sid Justice Narccisist Lex Luger Sting (GAB) Giant Gonzales Zues Yokozuna
top 10 tag teams:
British Bulldogs Powers of Pain Hart Foundation Killer Bees Rougeau Bros The Machines (Super, Big) Midnight ex R & R express Rockers Islanders
Mega-powers savage/liz savage/steamboat (wm3) mega maniacs savage/warrior (ss92) hogan/andre hogan/mr.t hogan/flair hogan/zues (NHB movie) Lesnar/golberg lesnar/hogan lesnar/rock hogan/michaels hogan/savage hogan/warrior diesel/michaels razor/diesel
The list can on and on of big profile matches to make into 2-packs too!
*Get a Legends of the month program fan club going. *have WWE put on a weekly legends show after RAW to educate new fans on legends. (have legends guest hosting) *Do BIG legend signings all over country/world. *Have a 10-page legends section seperate in WWE magazine. with a legend of the month mini-poster.
so much could be done for this line to flourish.
I'm for Hire Mattel!

So, which are you disappointed in? Mattel or Jakks?

Yeah, because Mattel, a company that works with WWE, is going to demand that they have an additional show just to teaching new fans about Legends.

Yeah, because Mattel, a company that works with WWE, is going to demand that they have an additional show just to teaching new fans about Legends. It would be a request or just working with them. It would only help WWE with Legend dvd/merchandise sales and what not anyway. Never said demanded!

They've said time and time again that they CANNOT make anyone who is currently in TNA. This eliminates any combination of Hogan, Flair and Sting.

Im perfectly happy with what and who they've released. The ONLY figure I wish was different was Slaughter cause I prefer a heel slaughter.

Anyone can say the perfect line-up, but there still has to be contracts involved.
Bret Hart for example would be great for any series 1, but he himself was being difficult with contract negotiations. Does that mean Mattel should halt the whole line & wait for him? No, of coarse not.
And they've said that the initial waves were done to give Jakks collectors something completely different by offering looks & attires that Jakks didn't do.

You have to keep in mind that this was not the best time for a new company to take over the WWE's Legends line. It's as simple as that. The big names that a lot of us want CAN'T be made. That's not Mattel's fault. It's just the era we're living in. Be patient. TNA seems like a highly unstable mess at times, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Hogan, Flair, etc. in Mattel form by 2013/2014. So, if you can wait, we will probably all EVENTUALLY get our wish. If there is one thing WWE has shown... it's that the big names ALWAYS come crawling back. The only guy you may not get is Sting. That would probably require TNA to go out of business totally.

i think mattel is putting out a much better product now then when they started with series 1. the headscans have become outstanding too. my only complaints with mattel are the lack of body molds which was a major complaint with jakks too. the other complaint is there rididculous price. they do have nice detail but the pricing is a bit steep for what you actually get.

If you collect DC Universe Classics, then you would know Mattel has always had distribution woes along with price hikes every year. Jakks has always had Mattel beat in distribution and marketing, which is why Jakks UFC is outselling Mattel WWE.

Where in the world did you get that from? Care to back up your ridiculous statement with some proof?

You're complaining about Mattel's selection yet your most wanted figure is Hercules?

IMO, the Legends line is one of the best things to come out of Mattel's deal with WWE. Just look at figures like Savage, Steamboat, Austin, Rock, Kamala, Demolition, Ultimate Warrior, Mr Wonderful, Rick Martel, Eddie Guerrero, Bam Bam, Iron Sheik, and Vader. The quality and detail is amazing! I don't think it's fair to compare how Jakks started the Classic Superstar line with Mattel's Legends debut, though.
First of all, Jakks didn't have to deal with so many wrestlers being in a different promotion. I have no doubts that Mattel would've given us Hogan, Flair, Foley, and many others if they weren't in TNA.
Second, it takes time to get contracts signed and deals worked out. People like Bret Hart and Macho Man weren't finalized when the line debuted but, taking Macho Man as an example, look at how many awesome figures we get once they are. Also, consider that Jakks didn't start the CS line until a few years after having the WWE license while Mattel has given us several waves of Legends within their first year!
Finally, the prices and economy of today is not the same as 2004. If Jakks was starting the CS line today, it would be having the same issues as Mattel. Jakks is currently reusing the same old molds and keeping their prices down by making the same type of product they've been doing for years. Mattel invested a ton of money in creating new figures with superior scaling, details, and accessories. It's natural that their prices will be higher but they ARE worth it.
All I'm saying is, give Mattel time. They're getting better and better with each new series. I'm looking forward to what news we'll get at SDCC and trust that they'll do a good job on evaluating what needs to be done with the Legends line.

a great notion man, I appreciate your opinion.
I have been going to Ringside Collectibles since Jakks Superstars Series 2, when I was 11 years old. I have watching the wrestling figure business transform. When I had the chance to catch up with an old friend of mine who was a fellow collector that whole time we had a conversation where these exact points came up.
I was done and had sold my figure collection and decided with the economy, the prices, and my age- I was finished. I would not start with a new line. But this person had showed me the Rick Rude Legends figure and I broke when I purchased the Elite CM Punk because it was simple: these are the best wrestling figures that have ever been produced. Period.
So the fact is these are the cream of the crop. Mattel nailed it. With the quality not in question, I really believe that with a marketing campaign as involved as you've come up with they could no doubt become a great success.
The WWE Vintage show in the UK is great- a form of that show maybe aimed at children would be great. There could be classic feuds followed each week, one-off matches, great promos/segments/moments...
I think Mattel realizes there is a lot left in this line and I'm content to see what they come up with out of the gate at SDCC next month, but in the meantime I'm biting my nails waiting to see what Bret Hart product is in store and what it looks like!
