This is quickly escalating into one of the biggest issues America faces, and yet there seems to be no viable way to solve it.

I don't think banning guns is the answer, though I'm certainly no advocate for the "arm everyone" argument that the NRA often poses either.

It just almost seems like an unsolvable problem, quite honestly. No matter how much we improve our awareness and treatment of mental health issues, there's always going to be people who fly under the radar and do these things. No matter how many sanctions we put on firearms, people are always going to find a way to get them, legally or illegally, in order to commit these heinous acts. It just seems impossible to solve.

I think one of the first places to start is to hold gun owners responsible for their weapons, to an extreme degree. For example, if you're a gun owner who keeps his/her weapons unlocked, and your child takes them and shoots up his/her school, the parents should be held accountable in serious fashion. At the very least, if the consequences are laid out, that may eliminate some concern.

But that only solves a miniscule fraction of the issue. I had a thought back when Sandy Hook first occurred regarding putting trackers in guns and giving police the ability to immobilize the weapon at a moment's notice, but frankly, I'm not sure that the technology is as advanced as it would need to be to safely and accurately implement without causing tremendous burden on the people who actually do need the weapons.

I think a lot of schools already have a police officer in place. My high school did (and still does), and we're not in what you'd consider a "rough neighborhood", nor have we ever had any violence outside of normal minor scuffles. That officer is specifically hired (or trained) to work in the high school. They're never on patrol in town, they're not even in uniform. They dress like a teacher, have an office, and handle any matter that might involve the law, alongside the principal and vice principal. They carried a weapon at all times.

I never found that to be strange, nor did I ever feel like my school was a "police state". No parents ever complained. In fact, because we interacted with the officer on such a regular basis, I found that a lot of kid's negative perception of police officers seemed to fade a bit.

I've often heard strong advocates of the NRA propose that everyone just carry a gun, though, which I find to be ridiculous. To me, that makes every heated situation unpredictable and gives every day citizens convenient access to a weapon whenever they see fit. I just get the feeling that we'd see more than a couple bar fights turn into gun fights with that mentality.

We don't but if he's an honest law abiding citizen then it's his choice to carry a weapon or not.



As far as banning so called 'assault weapons'... there are way more powerful hunting guns out there so I guess it would make sense to ban those as well. The so called 'assault weapons' out there (such as the one I own) are semi-auto, not full auto which is in fact banned from the public (although there are some ways around that sort of). The reason I have mine is just in case some day there is a SHTF event. I want to be able to defend my family and my home. If you don't know what SHTF is just google it. Oh yeah and another reason is because it's fun as heck to shoot.
