I saw someone throw the word "hipster" out there? lol, what? Ill leave that one alone.
Someone mentioned not liking people who feel they are above labels. Might just be a simplistic idea that we are all people who make choices based on our comfort and liking, and don't need to be labeled by any word or constriction because of it. I don't want to be known as someone whos "straight edge" not because I am above it, but because I don't label my choices in life with a word. At that point every choice we make can be defined by a label. When does it stop?
I don't really see not drinking or smoking as a "lifestyle" either .... I see it as a choice to not do something that doesn't interest me. I don't go around murdering people. I don't consider that a lifestyle because I choose not to do it. Nor do I seek recognition or a word to describe me as someone who goes against "the norm". I just don't like the idea of stating what one person does is "norm" and because I don't, im "anti norm" ... because "norm" isn't defined by anything to me.
I get the fact that we all want to belong to something and take pride in things that are important to us. ME (as in my opinion, with all respect to those who disagree), I don't take pride in not drinking, smoking, etc because I don't see it as an accomplishment. No effort goes into it. It takes more effort for me to go to the bathroom then not drink. Hopefully my point of view comes off correctly. Im typing this at work, doing multiple things at one time.
No, im not a "hipster" (yay, another label) and no, im not above labels, I just don't live by them.

No, living a healthy lifestyle is a lifestyle. Just how it is.

That does not equate a healthy lifestyle to me People miss points everywhere. It's a lifestyle. A way you live is a lifestyle. Doesn't matter if it has a cool term or not. A way you live is a lifestyle, things you are into(even if you are REALLY into them) are not.

Im pretty much straight edge. Dont drink, dont smoke or do drugs. Tried pot once, didnt like it, tried beer didnt like it so i just kept on the straight and narrow. Its not something i boast about its just a preference. Beer is rotten, cigarettes stink and drugs never appealed to me.

I disagree. Every decision and choice we make is different, and often contradictive, which means we live tons of different lifestyles. That's knitpicking to me. Your "lifestyle" is to broad to label based off every decision or choice. You reffered to being "straight edge" as a "healthy" lifestyle. I can be straight edge eat crap and weigh 600 ponds. Am I still living a healthy lifestyle?
We can agree to disagree.

Yeah same, I've tried stuff, didnt l;ike it. Never returned. I also hate the atmosphere of that stuff. Everyone has been a total scumbag that I've known that is all about partying and the what not but that mostly just applies to the drug scene.

No because you are calling straight edge a healthy lifestyle, you are suggesting one is the other because yoyu mixed my words and examples up. What you do and who you are is your lifestyle. What you like is just something you are in to. I have a friend that smokes tons of pot but he is motivated, has plenty of hobbies that he is good at, takes great care of his son, holds down a good job so I dont consider him a pot head. On the other hand I know someone who only cares about pot and if poit is not a subject he wants nothing to do with it. That's a pothead. There is a difference but yeah, whatever. Look into this too far again. I dont care.

It just strikes me as something that people adopt because they haven't really figured out who they are yet and instead latch on to something to give themselves an identity. I can sort of see the argument for people who grew up during that 80's(?) Punk movement where drugs/alcohol ran rampant, and so saying no to those things would be considered non conformist and a pretty big deal... kind of. Nowadays though, it just strikes me as outdated and silly. It really is a gimmick.

It's its just something people say because its easier than writing down a list of things they dont do and handing it to everyone. Ya know? That's how I use the term.
I dont like tattoo's i wont be getting tatted up in X's or wearing hoodies or getting silly piercings I just dont partake in those activities and its a simple way of saying I dont.
I dont get why religions dont get picked apart as much as this but whatever. Not worth arguing.

I personally, would NEVER want to be defined by something like choosing not to drink or use drugs. And like you said, its not the 80s anymore. MOST people don't abuse these things. What are you being an anti conformist against?

I was under the impression that the true meaning of straight edge was just being yourself and not caring what other people thought of you.

I can I say I'm straight edge. I've never had a drop of alcohol, never tried drugs, never smoked never done anything like that. I mean the only pills I take is when the doctors gives me a prescription. Outside of that I don't really take medicine for a couple of reasons. I do drink caffine or pop alot though. But I've personally labeled myself straight edge. It's much easier to tell someone that, then explain everything. Though I would probably never get it tattooed on me.

Only the people that label themselves straight edge with no clue what it really means are the annoying ones. I'm sure there's more to it than drug & alcohol abstinence.
In my entire life I've had one half puff of a cigarette when I was 10 as a dare, absolutely hated it & haven't touched one since. Someone bought me a beer once but I didn't drink it. And I've never abused any kind of drug in my life, I've only ever taken a few prescription tablets when I've been sick.
