The reason I made this thread is because I stumbled upon a 5-6 year old kid who uses Facebook and has a tumblr account. I was just astonished, this kid thinks hes all cool and 'swag'. It seems like the internet is getting younger and younger users each day. It somewhat disturbs me. I suppose it's just a generation gap and difference in lifestyle.
Obviously I used the internet a few times when I was young, but it was only in school or the odd time with my parents.
I think I was about 12/13 years old when I started using the internet more often, I joined here when I was about 13/14.
I didn't get a phone until I was 16, it sickens me to see kids obsessed with phones and devices of the like. I only have a basic phone for texting and such, iphones and smartphones are over my head.
What age did you start using the internet, and what do you think of kids of today and technology?

For me, I've always had the luxuries with using the internet or having a phone. However, I was only interested in using the Internet when I was about 13 or 14 and I got my first phone when I was 15 which for me was the most convenient because that's when I found a need to contact people the most. It is quite astounding how attached some people are to their smartphone in this day in age and at times, it does get infuriating sometimes seeing people around me texting all the time.

Welp, I got my phone at 8. Wait! It was because my bus at school was weird sometimes and I had to call my parents at tell them if the bus was going to be delayed. So there. And why are parents even allowing to have a Facebook at 5. I also know a kid who's like 6 and has Facebook, but he doesn't use it.

I guess that is just how it is now. I didn't use the internet or get a cell phone until I was in my twenties. But I am an old bastard and they weren't really mainstream until them. It seems weird to me, but who am I to judge?

We first got the internet when I was in elementary school. but that's when it was in it's infancy. We had Prodigy and pretty much all I used it for was to read these kids stories they had posted every day. I really didn't use the internet regularly until high school.
I got a phone when I was 16 or 17. The only reason I had it was to let my mom know where I was or what I was doing. I'm diabetic, so she wanted me to have something to be able to get a hold of help if I had an emergency.

I'm.... indifferent on this subject. On one hand I think it's absolutely no need for a little five or six year old to have a phone or a fully functioning computer. I feel that way because there is waaayy too much on the internet for a kid that young to be exposed to at such a young age. Children still have very much to learn at such an age and their parents should have the responsibility/pleasure/duty of introducing them to some of life's basic things before giving them the world at their finger tips in the internet.
That being said, my son is 13 months old and already knows how to point and drag things on a tablet. My point is that tech is everywhere. So much so that there's no way you can shut children off from it completely. I don't think there's anything wrong with technology being such a prominent part of our society. I just think there's a responsible and irresponsible way parent your kids when it comes to it.

I didn't use the internet until I was almost 12 and I think I was about 17 before I bothered getting a phone.
I find it strange that kids now have access to the internet and the wealth of knowledge that it can bring yet they're dumber than ever.

I've used the internet since I was 6 to play flash games, I only had a half hour or so on it a day and wasn't not allowed to setup any type of "accounts" until I was at least 10. I didn't have a phone until I was 11 and that was only because I had to walk to and from school.

It's just a generational thing but I completely understand how you feel.

I was about 10 when I had my first phone and started using the internet, mainly for YouTube. Around 12/13 I started using Facebook and Twitter. Now I can't get off them! But kids who are 12 or younger and act and do things that I myself have no intention of doing and posting it everywhere, that is just ing wrong.

That's nothing my cousin is 13-14 months old already has a wii, tablet, and iPod with games! It got me pretty mad but then again I did get my smartphone at 11 and knew how to operate windowsME when I was 3. I got into the Internet this year at the average 13 going to 14.

I didn't have my first phone until I was 18, and was paying for it myself. Even then, it was just a throwaway Go-Phone.
I didn't use the internet regularly until about 2002, so I would've been 13 or 14.. I got my first computer at home, with internet, in 04. It wasn't "my" computer and I only got to use it mostly when my parents were at work. I only went to school for half days my junior and senior year, and graduated when I was 17, so for 04/05 I got most of the afternoon to play on the computer by myself, and 2006 I got the whole day to myself. I was working a full time job by 07.. So I was never really a kid on the internet, I guess..

I think I first used the Internet (text only browser) when I was 15-16ish. I didn't have an always on Internet connection until I was 22-23ish. Prior to that had 14.4k dial up on a regular phone line and had to be kept to a minimum so others could use the phone. Didn't have a cell phone until I was 26 or 27.

The technology of today is definitely a wondrous and privileged thing to have for young (and all) generations .
But some people rely on them far too much, especially those who "can't live without it".

My nephew will be 7 and has a wii, iPod, and soon a 360 when I get it for him for his birthday. But his parents restrict what he can and can not do on those things.
