Let us all discuss the latest Kanye West album, officially released today, Yeezus. Some quick thoughts upon my first listen: - Production is flawless as usual.
- Sounds like 808s & Heartbreak on downers.
- DAT C-MURDER BEAT ON "BLOOD ON THE LEAVES"
- There are no singles on this album. Good thing.
- Half of all mainstream rap will probably try to sound like this in the next year.
How do ya'll feel?

Lets not discuss. He's a disgrace to hip hop. A disgrace to all human beings. He's racist. He's just an @$$hole

Only have had one listen through so far and I'm a little undecided. I didn't like My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy at first but ended up loving it so I think this may take me a few listens to get into. No songs really jump out as early favorites yet.

It reminds me a lot of Saul Williams, except trying way harder to be racy and offensive.

I'm not much of a hip hop fan, so I'm usually drawn in by artists who either A)have really intriguing lyrical content I can relate to, or B) really try to push the boundaries. I've always placed Kanye under the latter category and have appreciation for his work, even if I don't like all of it.
I've been listening to Yeezus for a few days now and I definitely enjoy it. It's fresh, it's exciting, it's thought-provoking at times. It's not perfect like a lot of people are claiming, I still think it has some instances of his usual meaningless bravado, but I don't ever expect that to go away. It's a daring record.
I think "Black Skinhead", in particular, is flat out fantastic.

Oh no I don't personally like him so no one is allowed to be a fan of his!
Just picked this one up, can't wait to give it a good listen.

Kanye needs to go away why are you even posting in here then? no one is forcing you to like him. Yeezus took a little while to really grow on me but it's a fantastic album and becomes better each time I've listened to it. It's not my favorite album of his but it's better than most of the things I've listened to this year and maybe even my favorite album of the year so far.

On the subject of Kanye, I was reading some of the comments on the Absolutepunk forums the last couple of days, and people were getting into massive arguments about this record, and about him in general.
Someone stated that Kanye West is, unequivocally, the defining artist of this generation. For me, I've always thought that that's something that should really only be viewed in hindsight, but, depending on what we define as "this generation", I'm hard pressed to find an individual more influential and more game changing, even if he is a total dick. Just an interesting discussion topic.

I've been listening to the album for the last few days, and am not a big fan. Definitely his weakest album next to 808's for me. No question the production value is top notch but for the most part, his lyrics have fallen short with me and the album in general feels very pretentious while being underwritten.

Pretty sure some people are confusing an abrasive personality and erratic behavior for a lack of talent. Love it or hate it, Kanye West is arguably the most influential figure in music today. A disgrace to hip-hop? Let's save that for the likes of Soulja Boy and Flo Rida. Pretty sure Kanye West has forgotten more music than I'll ever know. Check his production credits. His influences come from everywhere. Is he selfish and at times misogynistic? Sure. So are the majority of rappers. It comes with the genre.
Just like all of us, he isn't perfect. If you listen to the album (which you won't anyway, who am I kidding?), the lyrics on Yeezus actually highlight his flaws. He's conflicted with the concept of raising a daughter while simultaneously struggling with longstanding doubts and inner demons. He isn't pretending to be somebody he's not. He isn't furthering the black thug stereotype. He presents himself as he is, and doesn't really care what anybody else thinks.
Oh yeah, and he makes songs that aren't about him, too.

Don't even bother dude, I 100% agree with you and I think Kanye is by far one of the greatest of all time...but what you've got on this forum are people either too young to have listened to anything before his Taylor Swift incident, too influenced by a hive-mind, in an age group where anything that isn't rock is bad, or just biggoted. What ya'll need to realize is that everytime Kanye West has made an album, within the following six months, every artist has tried to mimic it. Sampling smooth classic R&B and soul music? Kanye did it first with The College Dropout Sampling electronic music with a fast tempo and slowing it down? Kanye did it first with My College Dropout and Graduation Singing with heavy auto-tune and distortion? Kanye did it first in 808's while T-Pain was creating pop music with autotune. Putting orchestras and horns on rap tracks? Once again, Kanye did it first in Late Registration and brought it back in MBDTF. So from now on, what I'm going to do is, any time any of the people who said "Let's not discuss it" post a topic, I'll make sure I reply with "No, let's not discuss that." I really like Yeezus, but I really don't like Hold My Liquor. I think Blood on the Leaves and Bound 2 are amazing. But see, we live in a world where people don't want to be challenged intellectually, where average is what's popular because it doesn't force anyone to really digest anything. Most people prefer the simplicity of the Flo Rida over the complexities of this type of music, because most people are simple minded and average. That's why a movie like Hugo makes significantly less than a movie like Shrek 2.

I think it's his best work, but then again I think he always continues to top himself. After his SNL performances I didn't hear as many polarizing opinions on his songs and I'm hearing the same for the album. I happen to love it. I my radio station could add it but we'd have to heavily edit it.
Also while we discuss Kanye being a dick do remember that history will remember his work and not himself. Yeah he's an assh*le. John Lennon beat both of his wives, Axl Rose does Axl Rose things, the two ladies from Heart fired their original band because they found it awkward after dating them, Morrissey said this of the Norway massacre in which 77 people died: "That is nothing compared to what happens in McDonald's and Kentucky Fried crap every day.", etc.
Yes, we know Kanye is a dick. That's nothing new to music. I'm not saying you have to like him for it, but if you like other musicians look into them and see if they're as good of people as you may assume.

The production on it is incredible, I'll give it that. But it is Kanye's weakest lyrical performance to date. There's a song about fisting for God sake.

cross post from other thread: yeezus is one of, if not the most forward thinking mainstream hip hop album of all time. taking sounds from the underground and ushering them into the pop sphere. maybe ye's best actually.
