Out of no where tonight, TNA decided to push Eric Young. Not just push him, but slap the TNA World Title on him. A C+ player was just beaten by a D- player for the TNA World Title. This title is effectively worth junk right now. TNA's version of Santino is now their world champion.
TNA has done some stupid things. They have booked inconsistently. They have booked repeatedly. They have been too conservative and too liberal. But tonight....tonight there is no explanation. There is no brighter day to come. There is no speech of positivity. What small things they accomplished tonight, which completely escape me right now, is outshadowed by this absurd gesture.
Honestly, what I believe we saw was TNA trying to take the Daniel Bryan momentum and put it on EY. Tons of mentions of underdog and how long EY has been in TNA and how he has fought and struggled his way to get to this moment against Magnus. All of that....eerily like the story WWE has told with Daniel Bryan. Is there anything wrong with the story? Nope. Anything wrong with trying to borrow from a good WWE idea? Nope. Anything wrong with making EY champ? YUP!
Why? Lets start with the fact that DB is ing amazingly over. Dude is getting 75,000 people in NO to point their fingers in the air and scream yes. He doesnt JUST do it in NO....but around the world. He has become a world wide phenomenon and he has earned it. While EY has spent a decade plus in TNA.....he has NEVER been remotely as over. In fact, right now.....he was getting dueling chants in his match. Right at the moment that Taz said EY has the people behind him, the other part of the duel went off...."EY Sucks." Hello John Cena! Oh wait.....not quite. You see, John Cena is rammed down our throats because John Cena commands millions in merchandising and is a product whore. Put Cena's name and likeness and we got 10,000 off the shelf before we finish our blink. Put that raspy voiced turd burgler EY's face or likeness.....oh yeah, he doesnt really have merchandise. Why? Because he cant move it. EY doesnt command millions....not thousands....not even hundreds. Careful...if you blink, his stuff just might collect one more moth ball while rotting away at the TNA Warehouse where Jimmy Jay is forced to do another <insert season name> Cleaning Sale. They also tried to sell an arm injury that EY had to overcome on his way to the TNA Title. Sound familiar? Could have sworn WWE just did that Sunday. Not to mention the small resemblance EY and DB have.
When Magnus, who find to be the most average performer on the TNA roster became TNA World Champion.....I still found a positive spin to put on it. Mr. Average could still be an effective foil to the right babyface challenger. When AJ Styles left, and that stung.....there was still a very small positive to find in that equation. But not this. No....not this. Exactly where does TNA go from here? With the positive strides that TNA has been making in recent weeks and some positive news/rumors that have come out....all of it and I truly mean ALL OF IT....just got flushed down the toilet. TNA is coming to NYC in June? Why should I go? I've got a D- World Champion that isnt anymore credible than say Christy Hemme to be World Champ. Actually....Christy has more credibility to be World Champion, considering her assets. EY remains the same man that Jarrett, a close friend, chose to offer a very low deal to that EY quickly turned down. But with VERY few options available....he returned, taking the offer and considered himself lucky.
I know EY is very well liked amongst the TNA locker room. And this is in no means a personal attack towards the man, eventhough it probably seems that way. At the same time, I wont post BS that I think this guy is super cool or that I have met him and he was really nice or any of that. To be perfectly honest, every encounter I have EVER had EY, he has come across as a pompous jerk. But no biggie. This is directed towards the character EY, his inability to get over, his lackluster performances and over the top and unfunny BS we sit through on Impact week in and week out. This is an indictment of TNA creative on exactly what is WRONG with TNA and how they seem to just randomly draw straws over who is gonna be World Champion. I've literally seen monkeys plan a better program than what was aired tonight......just watch numerous Raw episodes this year. And for all the shortcomings that I have shouted from the highest rooftops concerning Raw......TNA just took the cake tonight. TNA took all those horrible booking decisions by WWE, rolled it up into one. One horrible mistake. One mistake....they might not be able to get out from underneath.
