Messi had an alright showing but nothing monumental. He made some good passes/crosses but most of the time other guys took the helm and were firing away. I was hoping for that free-kick to go in, just feel bad for him now haha.

Great World Cup, can probably stop clinging onto France '98 now. Germany much deserved Winners, solid, unphased, ballers, organised, clinical. Too many Players used to playing week in week out together, from a young age, Final after Final. Didn't play great on the night but still won, and I'm glad it was settled properly instead of on Pens. The more Argentina's chances went by the more you knew it wasn't their night. Bit of a headsgone giving Messi the overall Player of the Tournament too, probably the Player of the Groups but disappeared in the latter stages. Shweinstieger, Neuer, Rodriguez, Robben more consistant throughout from start to finish. That's Summer over then.

Farewell to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, so many goals, so much drama, amazing to watch. World Cups are always so special, and for one month every 4 Years you forget about everything else and it's all about the football, you're sad when it's over but you're also happy you got to see it and experience it. 4 Years is a long time but I look forward to 2018. For now it's goodbye...

Fantastic World Cup, and the right team won. Think Germany are the only international team that could compete with the top club sides. Was a great finish too. I enjoyed watching Germany more than any other major contender, they deserved it. Won £70 off Rodriguez being top scorer and a Rodriguez/Germany double so please with that too as it allows me to end the WC with a profit.
Messi winning the Golden Ball was ridiculous. Like Dan said it was plausible at the group stages but he did almost nothing in the knockouts (0 goals 1 assist). I would've given it to Rodriguez, but Neuer, Muller and Robben were also all fine choices. It genuinely seems to me that he won it by some combination of his name value, Blatter liking him and them wanting to award it to someone in the stadium for the final. Someone said Addidas influenced it because many of the other nominees are Nike but that's too far fetched for me.
Pleased all my predictions for the big 4 (Spain's gameplan is getting found out, Brazil will bottle it under the pressure, Argentina will do well because of an easy run and Germany will win it) all came in. Wish I'd backed them at the bookies haha.

Happy for Germany, great side and deserving champions. May well have been a different story had Argentina not made some awful subs. Lavezzi had been the best player on the pitch the first half, and despite his misses Higuain's link up play was good. Aguero was appalling and Palacio isn't fit to be in any World Cup squad. Those two really made it difficult for Messi who had done pretty well in the first half, as they couldn't string a pass or move whatsoever. Terrible.
I felt bad for Messi. I think he did well in the first half but the longer the game went on without him getting the ball, the bigger the pressure was and he just didn't have the best night in general. Some of the resentment towards him is really harsh, he totally didn't deserve the golden ball though, and Blatter has just made Messi even more resentful by giving it to him. I think Messi would be the first to admit he doesn't deserve it and he sure didn't look like he wanted to accept it.
Anyway. Deserving champions and a scary team for the future. The best World Cup I've seen since 1998. So much drama, some great underdog stories, amazing goals, amazing saves and just the perfect World Cup as far as I'm concerned. Roll on Russia!

What a night! I was out there watching the game with a lot of other people and after we won everybody was on the streets just partying. It was amazing. Can't believe we finally won another World Cup after 24 years. I still prefer the 06 World Cup but this one will always be special to me.

Yeah, I think some of the hate Messi's receiving for getting the Golden Ball is a bit over the top, people are acting like Fred got it. He still single handedly got Argentina through the Groups, created more chances than any other Player in the Tournament, attempted more runs and got the most Man of the Matches, but there were obviously other Players more consistant throughout from start to finish that deserved it more (Shweinsteiger, Neuer, Hummels, Rodriguez, Robben etc). It may just of been a case of him being present at the Stadium, and because he's Adidas' main man.
My Team of the Tournament would be something like;
Neuer
Blind Vlaar Hummels Lahm
Shweinsteiger Mascherano
Robben Messi Rodriguez
Muller
So onto Russia anyway. I genuinely think France 2016 has the chance to be a better Tournament than Russia 2018, both footballing wise and as hosts. Spain, France and Germany should all have really strong Sides coming into it. Definitely going to try and get out there for a 10 days or so and try and get to a couple of Games. Paris, Monaco, Marseilles, Lyon etc all very different styles of Cities, should be a lot of fun.

I think it is worrying how prevalent this theory is, and both handing Messi the Ballon D'Or and this justification for it shows how awful they really are. I think much of the anger is snowballing with anger towards FIFA in general really, which is why the backlash has been so big.

I think they get the Ballon D'Or's near enough alright, Ronaldo thoroughly deserved it last Year, 2012 Messi had his record breaking year, 2011 was Messi at his peak for me in that Treble winning Season, 2010 could/should arguably have gone to Iniesta, Xavi or Sneijder though, then Messi was the best in 2009. This Year I think it would be fitting for possibly Shweinsteiger or Lahm to win though, both having great domestic Seasons and having been instrumental in winning the World Cup. It does go to show what influence and power sponsorship and money has to play when you see Messi accepting the Award last night, but you can kind of let it go. If he gets the Balon Do'r this Year though then it will be a shame and definitely do him more harm than good, and expose FIFA.

I think the Ballon D'Or has had its ups and downs but that's a different story. I'd love to see Lahm get the Ballon D'Or. Deserves it, been the best full back in the world for ages.

I'd love to see Lahm get the Ballon D'Or. Deserves it, been the best full back in the world for ages. Yeah he would be my pick for it too, he should really be the standout candidate. Ronaldo won the European Cup which aids his favour, although he was injured towards the latter end of the Season, and I think last year was more his Year. Bale won them the Copa Del Rey and was their best Player in the Champions League Final, and Modric/Ramos were just as important this Year for them. Suarez could of been a front runner for it with his Liverpool Season and if he started on fire for Barca, but that's out the window for obvious reasons now. Gabi and Godin of Atletico and Yaya Toure all had great Domestic Seasons, but Lahm and Shweinsteiger have been more deserving and performed on all levels, Domestically and at the World Cup. One of those two should get it.

If Messi gets the Ballon D'or this year I'm gonna hang myself. It's a ing joke he got the golden ball when there were at least 5 people who deserved it more than him but if he gets the Ballon D'or it'll be even more ridiculous than it is already.

Weird to think that France 2016 will be the last good Tournament until at least 2024. Russia, followed by a shockingly bad decision to do Euro 2020 all in different Countries, then Qatar.

Yeah but just because they're not in major footballing countries doesn't mean the tournament will be bad. It'd get a little tedious if the only countries to host tournaments were the eight who have won World Cups.

If anything Brazil 2014 was good in spite of its home nation rather than because of it. And Qatar 2022 will definitely affect the quality of football due to the heat.

I'm all for Countries getting the Tournament, developing their infrastructure and being great hosts to travel to, but places like Qatar where it's silly hot, have no ties to football and nobody will travel to are pointless. Brazil was a great example besides all the political parts.

The country should never have bid and wasted billions that should have been spent on improving the lives of its population. It has great footballing heritage but that doesn't excuse the shambles of the money wasted and the lives lost when that poorly-made and rushed bridge collapsed.
