Hello Fellow WFigs Members...
I was going through my figure collection today (I collected only Mattel's, hence the reason I've created this thread on the Mattel board - Mods: feel free to move it if you deem that there is a more appropriate section) and had myself a good old fashioned epiphany. Sitting on my bedroom floor, with all my wrestling figures splayed out around me it just dawned on me.
I think I'm obsessed. It wasn't so much the amount of figures I have. There's plenty of people on this board who have collection far greater than the one that lay before me now. This new realization slammed into me hardest when I was looking at the newest additions to my collection, the JR BAF set. I had just acquired them this past Friday at my local Toys R Us and had finally opened them just minutes before. That's when it hit me. Like a Mack truck doing seventy-five on a freeway it smashed me like a common bug on it's windshield... I wasn't excited at all to hold those figures in my hand. Even the completed Jim Ross brought me no thrill as I toyed with his joints, bending and flexing them every which way. These were figures I was eagerly anticipating since prototype pictures were first leaked. These were figures I had been agonizing over finding, checking my local Toys R Us WWE isle at least once a week since February. And yet, I felt nothing. No thrill. No excitement. No joy. Just nothing. Oh sure, I was elated, down right pleased as the fruitiest fruit punch, to finally see them hanging on the pegs last Friday afternoon. I was even happy to bring them home and set them in my room, anticipating the joy of breaking those boxes open and putting five awesome new figures on my shelf (I had recently rearranged things and had yet to put any of the figures on shelves). But there was no joy upon opening them. In fact, I was met with an odd sense of semi-disappointment.
This was a very weird feeling for me and as I looked over the rest of my figures it dawned on my that I had become crazed about acquiring many of them. Checking Ringside Collectibles, Amazon, and eBay multiple times a day in hopes that that right one would pop up. Briskly ambling towards the WWE section in Walmart, Toys R Us, and Target every chance I'd get. Buying figures I didn't really want at times. Spending more than I could afford at others (many others). And allowing the idea of new figures infest my day's thoughts to an alarming degree. In short, I had become obsessed with these plastic depictions of my favorite superstar of today and yesteryears.
Personally, I've decided I am going to sell most my collection and instead, focus on only a select few of my favorites. Mainly flashbacks of superstars who hold a special place in memories from days long gone. I shall let exclusive nostalgia rule from hence forth. This was an easy decision to make in light of my recent epiphany. Add in the rising the fact that my budget simply doesn't allow me to keep up with new releases as I'd like to and it became and even easier choice to make. Perhaps one day I will get back into heavy collecting again, but for now, I feel it's better that I take several steps back and purge myself of the objects of my obsession.
This whole scenario does leave me to wonder though...
Has any one else on this board felt the same way? has anyone else decided, for whatever reason, to dramatically reduce their own collections?
I am curious as to whether I am alone in my self-inflicted insanity... Sound off below.

Just a hobby, if you really think your obsessed, take a brake from buying and looking at them.

Perhaps you enjoy the thrill of the chase; the allure of obtaining them and once you have them - the thrill is gone...
Thanks for sharing though, that is interesting...though if I finally got the JR BAF set (which I've made no secret about wanting) that would be amazing...

Yup, same, it's all downhill from the moment you find the figure... But I'm not getting clean anytime soon.

Honestly I haven't had the same thrill of getting a new figure whether it be at the store or from an online retailer since a few years back. Like you mentioned, it does feel amazing when you find what you're looking for but the moment you open it all simply fades away for the most part. I'm not a completist by any means..I was one at the beginning of the Elite series but stopped and sold half of what I had by series 17. I'm not a fan of the current TV product yet I continue buying the figures just because. It's an addiction of some sort for sure. Although I collect different lines of toys also one of them being Hasbro and Toybiz Marvel Legends..those on the other hard I never get tired of. I'm way more heavily invested in that franchise though.

I've recently been feeling the same way. Especially with purchasing figures of today's era. With the exception of a few guys like Punk, Undertaker and Kane. I will always collect their elites and basics if they are cool enough.
I think I'm also leaning towards sticking to only flashbacks and the guys I mentioned above. One thing I have decided for sure is that I will not buy anymore duplicates. I've got 4 variant Shawn's, 3 E23 Takers, 2 Giants, 2 Cesaros, 2 Warriors, 2 Bruno's, 2 Honkys, etc... Lol its stupid. I wanted to have a loose and a MOC of all flashbacks that I bought so thats how it started and yeah.. It became an addiction to a degree. I'm going to sell all my duplicates and focus on only buying ones that really impress me.

Perhaps you enjoy the thrill of the chase; the allure of obtaining them and once you have them - the thrill is gone... I've found this to be the case a lot of the time. Yeah... I really think that's what it is/was most for me. Just the thrill of the hunt. I'm the type of guy who loves to dig trough old garages, barns, attics, etc... just to see what treasures might be hiding in there. I only started in on collecting wrestling figures on a whim really. Picked up a e20 CM Punk I saw hanging on pegs at Walmart one day. Just kind of snowballed from there. I honestly never really meant to get heavy into it. Thought it's be just one or two figures every now and again. Soon, it became three or four figures here, there, over there, back here, and everywhere. And trying to keep up with ALL the ones I'd want in the new series is just getting to space sucking and way too costly. Don't get me wrong, I think Mattel makes amazing figures for the most part and there's a good dozen or so that I'll never part with (if I can help it). And I still love wrestling, both modern time and years gone by. I just feel like I don't need all of them anymore and would rather they find their way into the collections of other fans or kids who'll play with them, hence the reason I've decided to sell most of them. It's certainly not the first time I'll sell a collection of mine (I've previously sold all my Power Rangers, TMNT, Transformers, Silverhawks, Thundercats, G.I. Joe, GameBoy, NES, SNES, Living Dead Dolls, McFarlane figures, & Mego Super Hero collections) and out of all of them that I have sold in the past, I've only ever regretted doing so with one (Battle Beasts - definitely looking to get those back soon though). There's a chance I'll regret selling the WWE figures sometime in the future, but I honestly don't think so. I've got bunches of wrestling video games and a ton of wrestling footage on DVD that can easily fill the space the figures were held. I'm going to sell all my duplicates and focus on only buying ones that really impress me. That's my thinking too. I'm gonna focus exclusively on flashbacks. Gonna keep a few modern era guys as well. I've got a nice little shelf that will hold around 40 or so figures and I feel like that's enough for me.

I had this same issue a few years back. I'd buy every elite under the sun, even when I completely loathed the wrestler just so I could add it to my collection. At some point, I realized that I needed to tone it down some and have simply reduced my collection to figures that I like instead of every figure that comes out. It's made it a pain at times because the ones I really want are always the short packed figures (go figure) but it has saved me money.
I do love going around to stores, however. That will never get old. Even after I had sold off a majority of my collection last year, I was still checking the pegs ALL THE TIME. I just wasn't buying anything.

I think I collect more out of habit than anything. I love the hunt and search, but once I find them, I put them in my display and that is where they sit never to be touched again except when I decide to re-organize the display.
I know I don't need any of these figures, but it's just what I do. It's been what I do my entire life. Not going to change my approach now.

This is depressing. lol. Collecting wrestling figures is just something that has always been in my life and as long as mattel keep making them I will still buy them. I try and stop impulse buys and completely plan what I'm buying before I go to the store.

I just see it as a hobby. Every person has something that they like to collect. For some people it's cars, for others it's bottles of vintage wine and others, like ourselves, collect wrestling figures. Nothing wrong with that, and definitely not an obsession.

Also, I don't even wanna talk about spending more than I can afford, done that many more times than I'd like to admit...

Well Quazi , im assuming other factors are taking place correct? or is that you just dont have the thrill to really collect anymore? if its the latter ... than take a break , or do like alot of other members and SELL. Go out by a nice dinner and move on to your next hobby (if you have one). Once ur done , your done.. like i said before in other posts there is no in-between really.

I'm kinda sorta with you bro. Both the shelves I had all my mattels in just recently broke so now I have this huge pile of figs on my bedroom floor. And I think it cost me some action the other night It's at the point where I feel really like I as NEED the figs that I haven't got yet. Maybe I'm just a healthy collector. Or maybe I too am just obsessed

I think im obsessed with the thrill of the hunt mostly, and the possiblity of getting that one or two figures that someday will be super hard to find, and highly wanted.

I was really obsessed with the hunt when I first started collecting about 2 years ago because virtually every store I walked in to had something I didn't have and I wanted to add it to my collection. Now I find myself just getting disappointed when I walk into a store because it takes so long for a new wave to hit retail.
