I was a little worried about this movie since I had never heard of Antman prior to this. It was great though ! I loved Michael Penas character and the Falcon scene. My favorite scene however was when they said "We have a superhero that walks on walls

Michael Pena wasn't even the funniest part of the movie, though. That's like saying the comedy in the first Iron Man was predicated on Terrance Howard. The true comedy, just like the heart of the film, came from Rudd and his outstanding performance (still the best single performance SINCE RDJ's turn in the first Iron Man) Everything was built from a very heartfelt place with his effort to fix himself, and his motivation with his daughter. Rudd and Adam McKay's comedy showed through in spades. We're talking about the comedy behind Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Step Brothers, The Other Guys, and The Campaign here. This movie falls in there with those types of comedies. So yeah, it's for sure not going to be for everyone, and that's cool. But it was certainly a GOOD movie, and a deserving entry in the MCU. I'm far more hopeful to see Rudd/Lilly opposite Iron Man, Cap, Scarlet Witch and the like. Evangeline Lilly and Black Widow should have a fun back and forth at some point down the line. This is essentially what I took from Ant-man, was that I think those two characters will be great additions to the Avengers team/world. I do think the film got caught between a comedy and action flick now that you point this out. Like, as a viewer, I was a bit confused as to what I was watching in that regard. Guardians of the Galaxy has an amazing dynamic of comedy and action, but at no point did I feel like I was watching a comedy flick. Ant-man wasn't a movie anyone was taking too seriously, I felt like the film makers understood that basic premise as well, but I felt like I was constantly stuck between feelings on what I was supposed to be taking seriously and what I was supposed to be laughing at. Even with that, if I break it into a vacuum, it wasn't a great comedy, and it wasn't a great action movie imo. So it did both passably well but nothing that blew me away in either department. I get that I'm, seemingly, one of the only people who didn't think this was great. At the same time, I'm not fully understanding what people love about it. I guess, primarily, it comes down to how much you enjoy the character and how well you think it fits into the MCU. For me, I like Paul Rudd, he's one of my favorite actors, but I've never been a particularly big fan of Ant-man. So that's probably just my problem where I feel like the actor is a great fit for the group films, and to be worked into other solo films, but I just don't care enough about the character to want to see him be the focal point of a franchise. Also, and I get that they went into pretty good depth on how he's able to transition from big to small, but the idea of two micro sized humans battling on a kids train set almost made it worse. Like I giggled at the Thomas the Train spot towards the end, but at the same time, I wasn't taking the fight seriously because of that comedy. I didn't think it was "bad". It's not one extreme or the other. It's just that for me, we've been getting great. Daredevil, Guardians, Avengers, Cap II, these were home run shots, grand slams. Ant-man was just a "meh" reaction for me. It's fair to say that I like RDJ in the Avengers movies better than his own franchise, at least 2 & 3 anyway. So it's not a big deal if Rudd is the same way for me, is all. I don't know what else to say about it... I wish I would have liked it more? I mean ultimately tastes are just going to be different, and that's alright. I felt this was better than GotG, myself. Up there with the Avengers and WInter Soldier flicks. I think the difference is this movie had a different level of heart than the others have had. Most of the MCU films have been about showmanship. They've been about spectacle. Ant-Man went to GREAT lengths to create that spectacle in a smaller world. And they knew people wouldn't really find that amazing, so they ran with it the way most people did. I think you're supposed to feel unsure about what to expect from the movie, because hell, the main character is unsure about it all right up to the last ten minutes. On the other end, I think we have a certain expectation. Even with GotG, as light-hearted as it was, it was that sort of 80s light-hearted. Where it was fun, but it still had some serious as sh*t moments. Ant-Man was the 90s kind of fun kids/comedy movie. It's the Dunston Checks In of the MCU. But we don't walk into a Marvel movie expecting true light-heaerted comedy made just to be fun. We walk in now expecting Avengers, Cap: Winter Soldier, or at most GotG -- forgetting that the target has and always will be kids. It worked for me. That's what it made me think of -- a 90s feel. I'm not saying that it's just you. We've ALL been conditioned to expect certain things from Marvel after 12 movies and counting. But nobody gave a damn about Ant-Man, just like nobody cared about Iron Man when it first came out. Short of us comic nerds or kids watching cartoons. But they took ANT-MAN of all heroes, and gave him a solo movie, and in at least some (many, in my opinion) respects -- they made it work. They made an Ant-Man movie work. They made an Ant-Man movie that lost it's known Director months before shooting started, work. That is to be commended, to me. I think like you, I didn't know what to expect when I walked in either, as most people didn't. I was mainly there because I'm a Paul Rudd fan. But when I saw what we were getting (a straight up 'innocent comedy') -- it was refreshing. And I was completely game. However, I will note this. I don't think a SINGLE thing about this movie would have worked, without Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, and Corey Stoll in their respective roles. The casting on this film was just absolutely phenomenal across the board for the main characters. They brought what COULD have been a disaster, to at least a passable entry in the MCU. That takes some doing. All just my opinion. Only engaging in some civil dialog between someone who loved it, and someone who wasn't particularly a fan, my man.

Saw this last night with the family. Awesome movie from the action to the comedy. I'm not familiar with Ant-Man and his background so my expectations wasn't high or anything, I do like super hero movies and I'm really liking what Marvel is doing. I honestly think Ant-Man/Paul Rudd is my new favorite, I can't wait to see him in Civil War. I saw they made $57 Mil over the weekend, I hope that's a success to Marvel and we get a part 2 a few years from now.
Spoilers Also did anyone get a little sad when Anthony died haha?

It's the same thing as adding a url tag, a quote, posting an image, etc. It's Bucky (the Winter Soldier)

I agree with Darkhawk slightly, in that the ending was weird. That whole scene with Luis saying random things was funny, but it just sort of ended. What do you mean? Falcon told the woman that he wanted to work with Ant Man, and she sent it along the grapevine back to Luis to tell Scott. I know but still, it seemed like an interesting way to end the film. After my second viewing, I've grown to like it more.

I can't believe I liked Ant-Man so much, I pretty much disliked almost the entire Phase 2 but this was very good. It had a generic business man villian but at least he was menacing and the final fight was just insane, very creative. Paul Rodd was good, I don't find him that funny but he was a very likeable protagonist, I hate these wisecracking sidekicks so much in these movies but Luis was actually very funny, the only thing that kind of bothered me was the way Falcon was written but it's just a little thing, great movie.

I was thinking......should we lock this one up in about 2 weeks and start a new one entitled
Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase III and have a poll with what are you looking forward to including
Cap III Dr Strange DD season 2
etc etc etc?

I heard the numbers for Ant-Man opening weren't too spectacular. It's kind of disappointing because it was such a great movie. It was nice to have a local friendly neighborhood superhero movie. Don't get me wrong, I love that most of the Marvel movies involve a lot of globe trotting and galaxy surfing but it was a really nice change of pace.

It opened to 58m stateside and over a 100m worldwide. It also debuted at 1# everywhere worldwide and has EXCELLENT word of mouth.....so Id say it has legs. It was around what I was expecting TBH......the fact that it dethroned Minions surprised me. Disney & Marvel Studios will be happy enough with its haul considering the production issues IMO.

My thoughts before this weekend were if Marvel was finally going to have a rough go of it, it would have been with Ant-Man. That didn't happen. It's not going to break any records but it'll do alright. I'm interested to see how it holds up against Pixels, before the next M:I comes out next week. I don't see Ant-Man being #1 for weeks, but if it can hold on to #2-3 for the next couple weeks, I'll be even more impressed. Was going to go see it the 2nd time today, but...$

I mean it's not a good sign for a movie when they don't show it to critics before its release. I hope people can see through the nostalgia and realize it's just another crapty Adam Sandler movie. But hey, what do I know... On topic, I kind of agree it might be time to move on to an Official Phase III thread... not that it matters, but at some point this thread will get glitchy.

I just re-watched GOTG again. I can not get enough of that movie. The dialog, the cast, the soundtrack, and the action are all spot on. I can not fathom how there are those who complain about the dance off at the end. To me, that showcases just how unorthodox they really are. I loved it.
That movie is just perfect IMO.

I've watched the movie a couple times and I realized it's not that great as people make it out to be. I would have to say Cap: Winter Soldier is one of Marvel's best films.

I honestly overwatched Gaurdians and kind of burnt myself out on it. I'd agree that TWS was the best of the MCU thus far, it was close but it just barely topped Gaurdians for me. TSW Guardians Avengers 1 My top three EASILY.
